For better or worse

Yeah, it’s as though the world changed while I slept. Well, if nothing else, this pretty much guarantees Trump the election. In theory, he ought to have been pushed way past the margin of fraud. A furious electorate will be out in force come November. People might forget the aftermath of a debate, but they won’t forget this. Ramp up those election-integrity efforts, guys!

An SOB from Alaska

Good luck with the appointment on Tuesday. This is becoming very concerning.

re: “A SOB” or “An SOB”?

From what I’ve seen, how you write it depends on how you say it: “a sob” or “an ess-oh-bee.” There’s no single, right answer to this question, so you just need to pick a style and stick with it.

Michelle sounds like another flaky one. Or more charitably, she was worried you were propositioning her. Did you have a reputation back in Seoul? Be honest.

Sinigang looks interesting. I might want to try that someday.

Awful jokes aside, I wonder whether the one-armed man has ever considered getting a functional prosthesis. Those things are getting better and better every year.

Born to lose

Climbing the stairs to BarCelona once was more than enough, but I wanted to get my daily donation down to the umbrella lady.

Just to be clear: the umbrella lady is mama’s friend, not mama herself…?

I considered getting her attention and tossing it down

Not a very nice way to give someone money, dude. I’d recommend respect. Next time, please walk over to her and hand her the money yourself.

So, I got to work.

Sounds as though you were lucky to be able to use up so many coupons in one go. In the US, that’s usually not possible. One coupon per trip.

I’ll get around to it one of these days.

Which reminds me: did you ever finish “Blue Eye Samurai,” or did that stall out?

I’m happy to report that I slept through the night without experiencing any breathing issues. I’m sorry to report that the dog walk left me breathless again, so I bailed on the Friday group hike.

What’s the date for when you see the pulmonary specialist?

This is from the Snackbar Facebook page…one word, despite what their new sign says.

I’ve written about similar inconsistencies in Korean signage, especially hotels/motels that don’t care about word order. A hotel might be called “Hotel Bliss” on the outside, but the bath towels in your room might say “Bliss Hotel.” And no one cares.

Toto, we’re not in Mayberry anymore

Reba’s old (69) but still cute.

re: “I’m Marrying My Sister’s Husband”

I guess I’ll have to watch the video to find out what that even means.

re: “how I lost my finger”

Until I looked more closely at the picture, I thought he’d lost his finger by sticking it where it didn’t belong—somewhere soft and warm… but filled with fangs.

re: SOB

Just don’t judge while drunk.

Coming apart at every nail

Just to be clear, it’s HIIT, not HITT: high-intensity interval training. But honestly, I make that typo a lot, too.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 12/July/2024 @ 4:57 pm

Sorry to read about the latest bout with breathing problems. It seems this doesn’t get any easier. On my blog, my buddy Charles had reacted to your comment by asking you to consider trying HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to help with the COPD. It’s a thought.

A river runs through it

Do maps really label that as a river? Not a creek or a stream?

Gimme cookie!

Are the kids generally well behaved, or do they become little cookie monsters?

There is something fishy about this place

I’m not a fan of open-air fish markets in the summertime. Product sits out all day, flies are everywhere…

After hike refreshments at Snackbar

The sign in the photo spells it “Snack Bar” (2 words), but I assume there’s a reason you spell it the way you do.

Speaking of Kevin, I was surprised to learn he had suffered a heart attack back in April. I am glad he lived to tell me about it!

Watch out for those bad-luck Kevins. They’re everywhere.

I’d never seen poor Swan so drunk before.

At least you’re taking care of each other. It’s a two-way street.

I didn’t realize the different styles of huts and shacks had names.

So is “nipa” some sort of generic term? There’s your research project, which will probably involve merely asking Swan for the answer.

Continued good luck with the breathing. Do see a specialist soon.

Jacked up

Ooh, that’s an interesting question. Is the group’s official name Subic Bay Hash House Harriers—in the plural? If so, then the plural is already included in the name, so, per your (correct) logic, you shouldn’t disturb the integrity of the name by using an apostrophe in the singular position. So Drain Snake is also right: the proper possessive in this case is Subic Bay Hash House Harriers’. You have to preserve the plural.

And points to Drain Snake for catching what I did not!

Upshot: you used the correct logic (name integrity) but got the wrong result. The name is already plural, so you need the plural possessive.

Think about names for single groups that are nevertheless grammatically plural:

The Beatles (one group, many members)
The Carpenters (one duo, two members)
etc.

So, I’d say

The Beatles’ new album
The Carpenters’ latest performance
etc.

But about specific members:

One Beatle’s problem was his soul-draining marriage to Yoko.
One Carpenter’s anorexia led to disaster.
One Subic Bay Hash House Harrier’s battle with COPD is documented on a blog.

Nice to see you again, mama!

She seems to be doing well.

This week, there was no Coke Zero or Diet Coke in stock.

Do they sell Coke under both names—Zero and Diet? In Korea, it’s all Zero now, so I’d thought that Coke had simply rebranded. No?

our annual anniversary Hash celebration there in October

Good to have something to look forward to.

The plan is to have a set price buffet and the meal cost will be included in the Hash fee for that run.

I’m all about the buffet. I’m going to guess $10-15. That’s an Old Country Buffet price from over a decade ago.

There’s a “fun” option on my phone camera that I’d never tried, so we played with that while waiting for our food.

Ha ha. See whether you have (or can get) the “crying” filter. (You might need to use Snapchat or some other service, though.)

And I went with the fish and chips. I wasn’t that impressed, to be honest.

You need these fish and chips. At a lot of places, I’ve noticed, fried foods could be left in the fryer for another 30 seconds to make things just that leeeeetle beeet crispier. So many places stop short of maximum crispiness (or maximum Chris Penis).

I came across this clip

I guess the joke wouldn’t have worked as well had she said “Fuck off.”

I’ll put “Billy Jack” on my ever-lengthening queue.

Dating the eighteen-year-old mother was kinky enough for me, thank you.

I really do hope you’re over that shit and have gotten it all out of your system. So to speak.

Have fun at those birthday parties.

So it goes

The Hares this week

Why so many? How many women does it take to plot a path?

I’ve heard of taking the measure of a man, but this is the first time I’ve seen it done.

Those dildos are never in Asian dimensions. I wonder why…

re: cake-making

I’m glad Swan enjoyed herself and got to witness How It’s Done.

Today’s YouTube video details some of what is happening here in the Philippines.

Yeah, I’m subscribed to China Uncensored, so I’ve seen this particular video. It’s a good channel, and they’ve been doing a lot of PRC-vs.-PI news lately as things heat up. And as it turns out, one of the PI’s mayors may well be a Chinese spy. Her past is certainly murky.

Michelle is more of a man than our current President, that’s for sure.

That “hawk, tuah” thing you pointed out a few posts ago is really having a moment right now, isn’t it. The lady claims she’s not pro-Trump, so I hope she sticks to just chomping dicks. I’d hate to see her become the face of a movement.

Just another Sunday

I’m guessing the “Famealy Restaurant” truck provides meals for families…?

One of the four girls I fed.

We shall know her by her flashing teeth.

Wine doesn’t spoil

Where’d you get that idea? Wine is very persnickety to store.

See that silver car parked across the highway? Well, it was blocking the garage…

So much fun stuff you can do with lipstick in such a situation.

It comes with rice, but they substituted fries since I don’t eat rice.

Korean heads are exploding. What kind of weirdo doesn’t eat rice? And who pairs fries with bulgogi? Do you actively hate rice or something?

I’m looking forward to the look on her face when she sees what making Jo a birthday cake looks like. I’ll try and get a photo or two.

Yes, we need a Swan reaction shot to the “birthday cake.” Someone should aim a video camera at her right as Jo is being caked, then send you a still of the best moment. (Or just send you the whole video, and you can select the still.)

Enjoy the Hash. By which I mean the walk, not the drugs.

Back at it

a cute little coffee shop in barangay Magna Vacca

Magna Vacca… “Big Cow”??

“Vacca” is where we get the word vaccine. Dr. Edward Jenner discovered that a small amount of cowpox made one immune to smallpox.

“Cow” in French is vache. In Spanish, it’s vaca. Both are derived from the Latin vacca.

Oh, and one of the straps on my backpack broke near the end of the trek, so I carried it on one shoulder the rest of the way.

Sucks. I can love a piece of equipment to death, but the moment it betrays me by, say, losing a strap or ripping a pocket, I’ll curse the thing out under my breath as a piece of shit, all love forgotten.

re: US Grant quote

I’m pretty sure the left sees patriotism as linked with superstition, ambition, and ignorance (“bitterly clinging to guns or religion”—Obama, slightly misquoted), while the O-so-enlightened left corners the market on intelligence. Yep, they’re the smart ones. Just look at Sniffy Joe Biden.

Enjoy dinner at John’s! How’s he doing these days?

Party fourth!

Well, they weren’t my instructions, but I’m glad everything worked out. Do you know where to go to see your updates?

(That’s not a rhetorical question. I don’t know anything about how WordPress works. Maybe the updates simply appear on your blog-admin dashboard…? That’s how it works for me as a Blogger user.)

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 06/July/2024 @ 6:28 pm

Ah—I scrolled to the bottom of your blog and saw: “Proudly powered by WordPress.”

Well, there you go!

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 06/July/2024 @ 12:05 am

Oh, yeah—about setting up an RSS feed, I found this for WordPress:

1. From your WordPress dashboard menu, select Appearance.
2. Go to the Widget section. Here, you’ll see the RSS widget.
3. Go to the Widget area.
4. Add your RSS URL to the widget.
5. Click Done and save your changes once you complete these actions.

The “RSS URL” would be “https://kevinswalk8.blogspot.com.”

Assuming your blogging service is WordPress.

You can also set up a feed for my main blog (BigHominid), too.

Independence Day #248

No, because “it” is still the subject of the main clause, and “it” is not the four-time loser. “Me” is an object pronoun, so it can never be the subject of a sentence—not unless you’re Jar-Jar Binks.

Me-sa makin’ a big speech in da Galactic Senate!

So beware dangling modifiers that look like this:

As a teacher, it’s hard for me to keep my students’ attention.

Correct:

As a teacher, I have trouble keeping my students’ attention.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 05/July/2024 @ 6:36 pm

The erroneous sentence has a dangling modifier: “As a four-time loser,” but the subject of the sentence is “it.” Is “it” the four-time loser? You have to change the subject to “I.”

As a four-time loser, I can’t argue with this.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 05/July/2024 @ 12:44 pm

…and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

We see this cowardice even today. People, given the choice, will often reject freedom. Freedoming is hard work. So much easier to rely on government, to be passive, to be a sheep.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 04/July/2024 @ 8:05 pm

Those breathing problems are worrisome. Good that you’re getting checked.

As a four-time loser, it is hard to argue with this.

D’oh! Spot the error!

(Here’s a hint at my old tutoring blog.)

If someone eats the frog, he’ll be the turd you intended

Here’s a relevant exchange from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the scene in which Prince Hamlet speaks in semi-riddles to his uncle Claudius, who had murdered Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet, to usurp the throne. Hamlet has accidentally killed the king’s flunky Polonius, and he’s now telling the king that Polonius is “at dinner,” not to eat, but to be eaten by worms, and that being eaten by worms is the fate even of kings (hint-hint!):

HAMLET: A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat of the fish that hath fed of that worm.

CLAUDIUS: What dost you mean by this?

HAMLET: Nothing but to show you how a king may go a progress through the guts of a beggar.

How a frog may “go a progress through the guts” to become a turd.

Have a good rooftop party! Happy Fourth! May much food progress through many guts on this fine day.

Good times, bad times, you know I’ve had my share

I hope you have a good party. Our own July 4th celebration has been delayed because my doctor’s appointment is next week on July 12. Eating off the chain on July 4th would ruin my numbers, so we’ll have our own celebration after the 12th. Probably burgers and dogs like you, along with pulled pork, fancied-up beans, and slaw. Maybe a dessert, too. July 4th is, along with Thanksgiving, one of the bigger meals that I prep for the crew.

Between one and four in the afternoon we had the heaviest rainstorm of the season.

The monsoon has started here, so I feel your pain. Technically, it started this past Saturday, when I did my rainy walk. It’s been raining pretty steadily all this week (but no rain at the moment), and I expect that to continue for a while. The monsoon usually ends around early to mid-August, which is why August sucks more than July. July might be hot, but the rain offers some relief. August, by contrast, is just brutal. At least for those of us who love the cold.

I always check the date of birth for comparison purposes

He was born in 1989. That was a big year. Tiananmen happened, and Ceausescu and his Missus were shot that Christmas. I was also studying abroad, first in Nice, France, then in Fribourg, Switzerland. What a year!

I can’t remember the last time I’ve broken the 30,000 step barrier. These days, I’m happy with 15,000 and consider 20,000+ an achievement.

Your Fitbit had you at 14.21 miles, or about 23K, a tiny bit more than the length of the walk I did this past Saturday. You can still do that, I’d say. Just stick to flat ground. And take along some pleasant company.

Righto… have a great party! I hope to see plenty of food pics, especially those weird hot dogs you guys have.

Carrying on

And to cut myself some slack, I’ll be sixty-nine next month.

On the cliff’s edge of seventy. They say that life begins at seventy… in truth, they don’t say that. My French papa, who is around 88, tells me he didn’t start to feel he was slowing down until he hit 70. Meanwhile, in your neck of the woods, you’ve got 80-something fellow expats setting an example. That oughtta’ shame you into not giving up.

On-Home was at Tongue And Groove’s place on the beach.

The term comes from woodworking and carpentry, but “tongue and groove” sounds rather provocative.

Beats me

I like the dog’s expression.

That hits a little too close to home

For what it’s worth, unrealistic self-image is a problem for both sexes. But when the gut’s hanging out, and you’re seeing a handsome devil in the mirror, that’s when you might need a second opinion to bring you back to Earth. (“You” in the abstract, not “you” personally!)

A sweet Sunday on the streets of San Isidro

It’s a bit pressuring to think of the disappointment a change of plans would bring to those kids we’ve addicted to chocolate.

Luckily, they’re addicts, and when was the last time you ever heard of a bunch of junkies having the brain cells to organize and take down their dealer?

This village is hard to access and so we don’t visit here every week.

Whoa. That place looks like the reason why the word “shanty” was invented.

The owner is due back in a couple of weeks; maybe he can turn things around.

A shame to know that everything is going to shit while he’s away. Aren’t the people currently running the place trying to keep the ship from sinking?

I hope the Hash went well today.

Doing it Rite

Looks to have been a good walk, and you’re getting Swan out of her shell: she’s walking with you more and more often, and for longer distances. Persuade her to do some 20-35K walks on flat ground, maybe spanning large swaths of the PI. Surely, there must be long paths somewhere.

I think you’ve shown that abandoned resort before… it’s somewhere between depressing and horror-movie set. That fuselage really sets the mood.

Monte Cristo looks good.

Keep on a-walkin’!

Up and over

A tree I liked

It seems there are many trees to like in your part of the world!

Something seems missing in this message

Trespassing is the fastest
a. way to die.
b. way to get laid.
c. way outta here.
d. way to learn about our dog.

My favorite spot to rest on this trail

In YouTube “fail” compilations, chairs like that always break, or a random dog leaps at the person from off-camera.

If there was easier access, I’d love to spend some time up here camping out.

If the Korean shwimteo/쉼터 is the rough equivalent of one of those structures (i.e., roof, no walls), I’ve seen bikers set up camp under those. Not exactly roughing it, but from a pragmatic perspective, the shelter’s roof keeps the rain mostly off you. Unless it’s super-windy.

A ballsy goat

I could see the scrote well enough, but making out the face was an exercise.

Cookie time

Kid on the right looks deadly serious. These are the solemn-ritual cookies.

My regulars. Even though I only see them three or four times a year, they never forget me.

Must be interesting to watch them grow up, a snapshot at a time.

Even got raided by the cops once when some Nazi-like neighbors reported us.

Those neighbors should be dragged out and shot. And yes, I’m aware of the irony in saying that. Still—fuck Nazi-like neighbors.

I’m actually not real comfortable around people I don’t know, but I do go to the bars to feel like I’m socializing.

I chuckled at the pic. Introvert’s nightmare. As for you and your discomfort, I’m sure the alcohol artificially lubricates social interactions.

I also feel safer here than I would in most parts of the USA.

By which you mean the urban parts. Horror movies, all made by Hollywood people who have no idea what they’re talking about, would have you believe that anything outside of a city is full of ravenous mutants, the angry products of incest, and torture dungeons.

May you not get rained on during your Rite Spotting.

Trees please me

This must be a male tree. I can tell by those coconuts.

I realize you’re joking, but if those are seeds (and coconuts are), the tree is female. Don’t misgender the tree! You’ll hurt its feelings.

Some of the menu options

Menu looks good. I’d have gone for pulled pork, smoked brisket, smoked sausage, and burnt-end candies. Those sound good.

It took a while, but I finally found a good one for me.

I suspect one of the deepest reasons for staying in a toxic relationship is that people are too fucking lazy to make the effort to break away. Easier to suffer and stay put than to claw your way out. “Better the devil you know” and all that.

Eggsactly!

Oh, the pain. Like a scrote-grabbing dwarf, bad puns always reach for low-hanging fruit.

Enjoy your SOB.

I’d written a fairly long comment, then accidentally clicked to close the tab instead of clicking “post comment.” So this new, briefer comment will have to suffice.

Question: aren’t there any gifted sign-makers in the expat community who could create signage so you can find your way up a trail to the upper falls (as well as to other landmarks)? In Korea, mountain trails are shot through with signs showing direction and distance. There are also signs marking the official summit of a mountain. I’ve seen pics on your blog of you standing next to such signs in Korea.

I’m glad you and Swan worked out your differences. The relationship road is bumpy but navigable, especially when the distaff half of the relationship is emotionally secure and stable, and not an immature, selfish, jealous, raving, money-grubbing lunatic.

We did find a different trail back to the car which provided a nice change of scenery

Spot the error! (Only visible when I point it out, and never visible the moment the error is being committed.)

Let’s go shopping

A better Dan Brown link is here. “Narrative hook” formula explained.

» Posted By Kevin Kim On 26/June/2024 @ 6:34 pm

Shakey’s was THE place for pizza when I was growing up in Southern Cal.

When I was a kid in northern Virginia, we had a Shakey’s down the street. When I played league soccer as a kid, that’s where we’d go at the end of the season.

The night didn’t end well, but that’s a story for another day.

That could mean just about anything, from breathing problems to arguments. But it’s a Dan Brown-style narrative hook, so I’ll await the explanation.

We have a shitty president

But at least we know where he is at all times.

Me at the 8th Army Ball
