Down some slippery steps
No one ever thinks to maintain the steps by giving them a good brushing to get rid of accumulated algae, eh? True here, too. And probably the States. When the weather’s good, no one thinks about maintenance. Then the rains come, and everyone remembers and bitches.
Yeah, I felt like a pussy, but it just wasn’t worth it to continue when each step was painful.
As in PAIN-pain? Not because of breathing difficulties? Feet hurting? Inner thigh rubbed raw? Something else?

When it was raining the other day, my wet shorts rubbed my thigh raw. That was painful enough!
I wear Spandex biker shorts for my inner thighs. People have suggested Vaseline and various other lotions and salves, but those rub off and need to be reapplied. Spandex, by contrast, is forever.

I trust that solar will become more efficient as time goes on, but for the moment, I’m not all that impressed. You’re at the mercy of the clouds and the dust, and it takes energy to clean the panels. The panels themselves, as I’ve written before, are a nightmare to dispose of; the resources needed to make solar panels require damaging the earth, and the overall bang for the buck isn’t that much. I’m not saying I’m against solar energy; we’re simply not there yet. I wonder when we will be. Probably not in my lifetime.
Solar panels are widely used in South Korea. They create their own microclimates and microenvironments. This strikes me as both good and bad. In the meantime, you’re right: the panels uglify the landscape. I hope that, as we study more closely how nature stores, converts, and uses energy, we’ll create increasingly efficient and less polluting technology. Meanwhile, we’re stuck in the current maturation phase. (I keep hoping for fusion to happen, frankly.)
Oh well, once your feet are wet, does it really matter?

re: Reekay and that woman
A buddy of mine got divorced for reasons somewhat similar to one of the scenarios that Reekay describes. He and his wife got married after he’d made clear that he wanted no kids. At the time, she’d agreed to this. They got married… then the pressure of the biological clock became too much for his wife (Sri Lankan, and more traditional than even she had realized), and she confessed that she wanted a kid. My buddy freaked out, feeling utterly betrayed, and the two of them eventually got divorced. Last I heard, she was still trying on her own for a baby—in vitro or whatever. I don’t know whether she’s currently in any sort of relationship. Or my buddy, either, for that matter. We haven’t talked in a long while. Kind of sad when that sort of thing happens. Divorce for reasons of disagreement, dishonesty, or misunderstanding, I mean.

Nice food pics, and yeah, that’s a small, gravy-slathered steak. When I serve mine surf-and-turf style, i.e., with shrimp, I put sauces on the side: a pan sauce (beef dripping, red-wine reduction), chimichurri (the most awesome sauce ever created), and butter-garlic (standard but delicious).
I hope the Hash went well. Sorry to hear about the breathing attack… damn, and right during the happy ending. I hope you don’t start to associate happy endings with breathing attacks.

Dude, you need to get out more. Look on any Spanish-language menu (or a menu with Spanish-y words) for the terms “camarones” (shrimp, pl.) or “gambas” (prawns). A whole universe awaits you. Latin food with seafood is pretty close to miraculous, from paella on down, and I’m sure a Latin influence can easily be found in Filipino food.
re: cherry pie
That looks like a glorious disaster, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Berry pies often tend to be messy-looking because of the berries’ inherent juiciness. For this reason, a lot of people forgo the pie and just make a cobbler, with a chaotic crumble on top. You end up with almost the same messy result, but with a cobbler, there’s no expectation that you’ll try cutting the thing into neat wedges. Neat wedges are close to impossible with properly done berry pies, not unless you add an inordinate amount of thickener (gelatin, cornstarch, etc.), then let the pie cool down to the point where wedges are possible. By that point, though, the pie is usually too cool to enjoy right. (Doesn’t this look a little too suspiciously neat?) Or maybe I just have a very specific taste when it comes to berry pies. Anyway, my point is that the cherry pie looks broken and runny, yes, but that is just as God intended. I bet it was awesome. Taste always trumps looks.
It wasn’t the music, but I experienced a breathing attack for some reason.
I can’t remember—what did the docs say about that? COPD? Are these random attacks now the new normal, i.e., unavoidable?

Swan says I was unsteady on my feet but made it back to the hotel without incident.
This is why I don’t think you’re as in control as you claim. This sort of thing happens way too often if your blog is to be trusted.
I didn’t even bother unpacking my laptop.
I did notice the lack of early-morning comments on my blog as well as the lack of a 4:30 p.m. (Seoul time) post at LTG. I’m like a dog who knows when you’re breaking routine.
So! Rain, rain, rain. The monsoon is over in Korea; we’re getting some random, light rain, and that’s it. September is starting off hot but getting surprisingly cool in the evenings. The buildings are often worse than it is outside.

The rain can have its own particular charm. When I lived in Fribourg, Switzerland, there was a local bus that went out to a place called Lac Noir (Black Lake), a smallish lake whose circumference was walkable in well under an hour. Benches lined the edge of the lake, and I recall going there once or twice in the rain, watching the raindrops hit the lake’s surface in their millions, creating something like a static, white-noise pattern. Gorgeous and meditative. That may be one reason why I’m much more of a lakes-and-rivers guy than a beach guy, but the beach has its charm, too. When I go to the beach—which is a rare thing—and face all that water, I often find myself contemplating the subtle-yet-gigantic power of gravity, holding all that water down. But the power doesn’t have a perfect hold on the water, which is one reason why we see waves, which are signs of the ocean’s resistance to gravity.
So I’ll wish you a thoughtful trip out with Swan. It’s a nice break in the usual pattern, and while the routine has its comforts, breaking from the routine now and again can also bring new delights. Enjoy!

I saw Jeff this morning, and he told me we’d take the drinking much slower during our upcoming Angeles visit. Yep, I know I will.

I’ve accused Korean guys of being spoiled mama’s boys who are raised to remain dependent on their parents and aren’t equipped to cope with the world because the idea is that they marry a good woman with common sense who essentially takes the place of the mother, thus allowing the guy to continue to bumble along cluelessly through life. But in recent years, it’s become obvious to me that Western guys are also sent out into the world lacking certain essentials, and many of these guys, even after being kicked in the head by life, still fail to learn essential lessons. Not all Western guys, to be sure, but way more than I’d originally thought.
Condolences about Snickers. Was this the first-ever photo I’d seen of the dog? Didn’t look familiar at all.
