It doesn’t always go according to plan
In the States and South Korea, “park authorities” are the ones most closely involved with maintaining the pristine nature of parkland and ecological preserves. They’re the rangers who school young people on how to behave inside parks; they’re the crew that’s out there picking up litter (which, in Korea, needs to happen way more often). Now frankly, I’ve never seen a Korean park ranger, but then again, I’ve never looked hard for one. Do you have ecological preserves in the Philippines? I bet you do, just maybe not in your locality. Such trappings of civilization don’t show up until you’re closer to the big cities, I bet. Kind of the same situation in Korea. Example: remember that 18K route we walked from Seoul to Bundang, a straight shot south? We passed one or two large ecological preserves on our way down. That Seoul-Bundang axis is very urbanized. Out in the boonies, though, when I’m walking a long trail, ecological parks are few and far between. They do exist, but they’re not as numerous.

I can see how discovering a blocked path could be annoying, but I can also see how figuring out the problem caused by the blockage could be an adventure. What’s your perspective? Have you ever thought that it might be nice for park authorities to label and maintain some official paths for local use so that you’re never in danger of losing old, well-known paths?
I guess calling Trump Hitler is okay, but don’t you dare say anything bad about Obama.

Was that “Calvin” strip actually drawn by Bill Watterson? I get the feeling it wasn’t, especially if the date (hard to see) is 2023. Watterson retired in 1995. I did see some 2023 news, though, that Watterson may be working on a more adult comic, a fable possibly dealing with life’s mysteries.

At least the Arkansas ma didn’t sprinkle Pop Rocks on her corn cobs to make popcorn. Wasn’t it George Carlin who noted that the average person is pretty dumb, which means half the country is dumber than that?

Happy 20th anniversary! My blog’s was in 2023. You’ve come a long way from Seoul.
Sure, we all write our drivel and hope people will care, and parts of our blogs might even outlast us if we find people to keep paying subscription fees for image hosting after we die (in my case, anyway), but the “drivel” is the magic of the ordinary, as Zen Buddhism reminds us. The ordinary—the routines, the mundanity, the morning breath, the farting, the scab-picking, the rituals, the habits—is where life is lived. Of course, we have peaks, but life is lived in the valleys.
Again, Happy Blogiversary. Long may you reign over your cyber-hill.

I’m sorry to say, looks can be deceiving. It tasted dry and unsweet, lacking the flavorful richness I’m accustomed to. That small slice cost me 180 calories, and it was unsatisfying to my sweet tooth. Needless to say, I won’t be tempted to indulge again.
There’s the question of calories, then there’s the question of carbs. The caloric intake does matter, but the carbs arguably matter more. More than 100 g a day is probably not good for your blood sugar, but 180 calories for a slice of carrot cake that has a third of the carbs of regular carrot cake isn’t a bad trade-off.
As for the taste: there are definitely low-carb alternatives that I don’t like, either, so you have my sympathy. There may be things Swan can do to improve the eating experience, maybe by adding other ingredients to make the cake more moist (she might need more oil… I’d recommend coconut oil for carrot cake, or she could try adding another egg or two) or by using a different sweetener.
Have you had that sweetener in other things? Does it pass the taste test in those instances? Just be careful not to add too much sweetener, especially if you don’t like it: things that taste bad will only taste worse.
At this point, I have a whole array of different sweeteners that I use in different cooking contexts—erythritol, allulose, Splenda/sucralose, Stevia (which I don’t much like in pure form), Truvia (only partly Stevia), etc. In some cases, it doesn’t matter which sweetener I use; in others, a given sweetener will be a clear winner. None of them, though, will ever taste as good as real sugar; it’s just a reality you have to get used to, and the main coping mechanism for most of us in this position is cheat days. Just eat the real thing every once in a while, like once or twice a month.
For what it’s worth, my current favorite sweetener is Bocha Sweet, called bocha (“BOH-tchuh,” not “BOH-kuh”… goofy commercial here) because it’s derived from the kabocha squash (if you order it, though, expect it to be hellishly expensive). It’s good for sweetening your tea or coffee or whipped cream, and also for baked goods. But despite how good it is, you can still tell it’s not sugar.
Or maybe this is all just a psychological problem: you seem fine with Diet Coke or Coke Zero, for example; Diet Coke has aspartame, and Coke Zero is a combo of aspartame and something else (acesulfame potassium, or Ace-K). Can you extend your love of sugar-free Coke to other foods?

Swan’s comment makes sense for me since I hate heat, but what’s her excuse? She grew up in it! Besides, I distance walk in the summer, just not during the day. Still, Korean summer nights are hot and humid.
To be fair, though, you guys deal with heat and a lot more hills.

I guess you can write this however you want since it doesn’t really match any Romance language, but if you wanted to follow the linguistic rules, you should know that, in French and Spanish, “de la” is followed by a SINGULAR feminine noun.

I think one of the first stereotypes to go out the window after marriage is the idea the Asian women are demure and submissive. For American feminists to hold on to that stereotype is hilarious.
It was a different commenter who warned about the possibility that the kids might start to expect these weekly deliveries and become toxically dependent on them. Can you ask the kids to start paying these good deeds forward in some way? Can this good thing be made into something greater?
I don’t know what “sans souci” might mean in German, but it’s borrowed from French, where it means “without worry.” So… a pleasure palace where you won’t get any diseases?

At the rate you’re going, you’ll lose 60 pounds in 3 months, the way I did in 2021. Of course, I gained most of that weight back. If you lose 60 pounds and keep it off all of next year, I’ll shave off all my hair. From on my head, I mean.

Turkey looks good! Cranberries look good! I envy your table space! (Our office is cramped and lacks horizontal surfaces.) Wednesday walk looks long yet good! Bay views look gorgeous! Kare-kare looks delicious! Baked beans are full of carbs! Surely, you know this (and I’ll stop calling you Shirley)! Stick with leafy greens and water-logged veggies like cucumbers! Chickens look good! Oh, and the candied yams look perfectly done! I guess you followed a recipe pretty closely. Nothing wrong with that; I use recipes all the time.
