You have indeed mentioned splitting your time between countries; I just somehow failed to make the proper connection. Sorry about that. I envy that lifestyle, though: having homes in more than one country is something I can only aspire to. In my dreams, I’d split my life three ways: a home in the States, a home in Switzerland (or maybe France), and a home in Korea. Good way to maintain skills in three languages, as well as to bask in three different cultural perspectives.

Congratulations! But I’m not sure I understand why there’s all this urgency about the green card if you’re both just planning to return to Korea. Is the Missus eventually going to become an American citizen? If so, doesn’t she have to be a more or less continuous resident of the States to qualify for citizenship? Color me dazed and confused. I await your kind clarification, and apologize if you already explained this elsewhere on the blog. (Feel free to offer a link, and I’ll reread the material, properly chastened.)

Two things I haven’t done this year
Congrats on quitting smoking! It may be difficult to stay quit, as you say, but I bet your accumulation of good, healthy habits—thanks to the weight-loss program—has given your willpower enough momentum to overcome the ciggy hurdle. Staying quit would be a lot harder were you not also improving yourself in other areas.
I now regret that Itaewon/bomber jacket jibe. I said that mainly because there are so many gray-haired white dudes in Itaewon who look as if they’re trying to recapture lost youth, and it really does seem kinda’ sad to me. Because I know you better than I know them, I wouldn’t lump you in with them. Far from trying in vain to recapture what can’t be recaptured, your efforts at getting healthier are more an embrace of the future: a “new you,” not an “old you” from the past. That sets you apart. So wear that dead-animal skin proudly, White Man!

Your kid could teach some awkward, overly showy, Korea-based podcasters a thing or two about proper on-camera delivery. Kevin(!!) is very articulate, fluent, and clear in his presentation—all business, no BS. His ability to string a series of ideas together in a non-stop, but not incomprehensibly stream-of-consciousness, manner is uncanny. Kudos!

It’s a bit like the paradox that occurs whenever we have this exchange:
Bill: How’s your cold?
Sam: Better, thanks.Sam’s intention is to say that his cold is actually worse, i.e., Sam is getting better, but his cold is on the wane. Taken literally, though, Sam is mistakenly saying that his cold is what’s improving, i.e., strengthening.
Upshot: maybe we shouldn’t take Tom Waits too literally. But if that’s so, then why believe Tom Waits at all?

So maybe Waits is really saying that bad writing will save us all… in which case you’re not helping humanity’s lot, since you’re actually a much better writer than you give yourself credit for. Further, it means that Waits’s overly ambiguous quote is an example of bad writing, which makes Waits more of a savior than you.
Can’t win ’em all, eh?
