Really? You struck me as the friendly, gregarious sort the day we met.
I know you’re missing the Missus as well as life back among those Lilliputian Hangukeenies. Not sure how much longer you have to endure your current situation before you head on back to the peninsula, but I’m sure you’ll tough it out and find a cure for boredom and anomie.

Not good. Here’s hoping you snap out of your funk. Go do something to help some people, maybe. Help some military vets, for example. That was probably the one good and worthy thing my father ever did.

You also sound a bit depressed. Good luck with job applications as you deal with your new normal. Any chance you might plan and execute a road trip to somewhere you’ve never been? Of course, more than a road trip, it sounds as though you need a good, steady routine to get your sleep pattern back in order. Again, good luck.

I’ve found Windex to be a much more effective mosquito-killer than F-Killer Blue Label. Windex kills almost everything that flies and has six legs. (I wish I could get hold of the old F-Killer White Label, with the red cap, because that stuff killed mosquitoes dead.)
Or you could get one of these babies.

Ah… sunny, beautiful, happy Pyongyang! There’s an ironically dehumanizing quality to that video, which portrays Pyongyang’s citizens as scurrying and insectile. Like insects, the people bustle about, waiting to be crushed, zapped, or otherwise dispatched.

There’s always that moment when you’re looking at your plate, at the amount of food on it, and mentally matching up the quantity of food with the price, then wondering whether the whole affair is worth your while. The food looks good, if nothing else. Worth $100 a person? Not so sure about that. Maybe you all were paying for the ambiance.

That said, I think your assessment of the night’s events is fair-minded: there’s enough blame to go around on both sides. True: you probably weren’t being any louder than the loudest of the Koreans. Also true: English does stand out in a sea of ambient Korean, and vice versa when Koreans jabber in a crowd of Americans.
Would’ve been nice to fire a garden hose at those two shouting ajummas—the way we separate two mating dogs in the States. Failing that… water balloons?
Sorry to hear about the keyboard. Why not let the keyboard sit for an hour in a warm saline bath to dissolve the Diet Coke? Heh.

Ah, yes… NALC. My mother used to work there, at First and C Streets, close to the Capitol. DC is an odd mishmash of often-clashing architecture, sitting atop poorly laid-out streets designed by a demented Frenchman. You can find a small measure of sanity in the rigid gridwork of the Georgetown University/Foxhall neighborhoods, but that’s about it. DC was designed for carriages, not cars. And plenty of its neighborhoods are fugly.
