I must be at the other end of the preferential spectrum: I’ve been living alone and independently for so long that I’m in no hurry to plunge into a committed relationship. I’ve made myself self-sufficient in so many ways, and I enjoy solitude so much, that shoving my habits and routines aside to accommodate someone else seems quite a burden. My current thing with Ligament has a definite “friend zone” feel to it, but we both seem comfortable with that and are waiting to see what happens next. It’s all happening gradually, which makes it pleasant instead of jarring.
Meanwhile, you have my sympathies: if you’re that gregarious a person, or at least in need of a life-companion (if not a whole group of friends) to see you through your days, then your current isolation probably isn’t all that pleasant. May you find your way to a better shore… but do note that, in this admirably frank and autobiographical post, there are detectable patterns that hint at a road map for avoiding such pitfalls.
Merry Christmas, my friend. Feel me to contact me if’n you wanna hit another resto. I wouldn’t mind taking a tour of Itaewon’s best eateries. Along with Linus’s, I’m also very interested in Braai Republic, although I’ve heard that you need reservations.

Welcome back! I’m glad you had the chance to fly business. When I was a young’n, I used to fly first class all the time thanks to my father’s airline-employee privileges. Northwest Airlines wasn’t so generous as to give the family free passes, but flying round-trip to and from Korea for about $50 a person wasn’t a bad deal at all. I’ve lost all that, now, which means I’ve had to grovel for an aisle, exit-row seat in economy class whenever I fly… although I’ve noticed that, lately, the US airlines make you pay extra to get an exit-row seat (I think you mentioned this as well, ja?). Little by little, everything is being monetized. We’ll probably be charged for flatulence soon, once they figure out how to install thermal scanners and electronic chemical sniffers.
Here’s hoping you can slip back into the groove at work. I’m sure the Missus is happy to be home. I want to make a joke about how vampires can wither if they’re too long away from their native soil, but I don’t think you’d take kindly to my calling your wife a bloodsucker.

Glad you got home safely. Too bad you seem to have such bad experiences with cabbies. For me, it’s bad only when I’m in neighborhoods where most of the cabbies are looking to take people outside of Seoul.
Also glad that you and the boss seem to be getting along. Imagine what life would be like if employer/employee relationships were shitty.

You’re absolutely right: “bada” is “sea” and “mul” is water, but the thing to know (and this is why Korean can be confusing to learn) is that those are both pure-Korean words, whereas “hae” meaning “sea” is Chinese, and so is “mul” meaning “creature/thing.” Korean has, you might say, two “layers” of vocabulary: very often, there’s both a pure-Korean and a Sino-Korean way to express something. Other examples:
chan-mul = cold water (pure-Kor.)
naeng-su = cold water (Sino-Kor.)meori = head/hair (pure-Kor.)
-du = head (Sino-Kor., bound particle)saram = person (pure-Kor.)
-in = person (Sino-Kor., bound particle)jeol = temple (pure-Kor.)
-sa = temple (Sino-Kor., bound particle)naganeun-got = exit (pure-Kor.)
chul-gu = exit (Sino-Kor.)A bound particle is a noun that never appears by itself: it’s always part of a larger word. For example, if I want to say, “I’m going to the temple,” I’d say “Jeol-ae gayo,” and never “Sa-ae gayo.” If you say the latter, no one will understand you because “-sa” always occurs in context, bound to another syllable, hence the term “bound particle.”

That’s five times around the twelve-year Chinese zodiac, and Koreans normally celebrate this with a special party called “hwan-gap,” a reference to having completed the 60-year cycle. If no one’s said anything to you about hwan-gap plans, it could be that you’ll be in for a surprise on Thursday. And, hey—if you don’t get a proper hwan-gap celebration, go have an awesome meal at your favorite meatateria, anyway.
