Wonderful tribute, and yes, I’m sorry I missed the opportunity.
RIP, Bridget. And sincerest condolences to you, John.

I think the current science is that short, intense, uphill or upstairs trudges that get you puffing and keep you there are better than long, all-day walks (i.e., 25 minutes up the hellish Namsan stairs is better than 3 hours along the Han). Part of the reason for this is that high-intensity effort creates a “burn” that continues on for several hours even after you stop exercising. Dr. Ken Cooper might disagree, however; in his classic book Aerobics, in which he maps cardio onto a point system (you have to earn 30 points per week), Cooper argues that even easy walking, if done long enough and far enough, can have aerobic benefit: you can earn points just walking along the Han, in other words. A PDF of his charts can be found here.

Congratulations! And I think you beat my count for the week:
5/16: 26,499 (Mon)
5/17: 15,910
5/18: 24,369
5/19: 8,341 (Thu—rest day)
5/20: 24,633
5/21: 170 (ha ha! an absolutely NOTHING Saturday!)
5/22: 22,023Total: 121,945 steps
You’re obviously well over your weekly goal of 100,000 steps—124.2% over your goal, to be exact. Maybe it’s time to set the new baseline at 120,000…?

A much more productive Saturday than my own, which so far has involved just being horizontal.

Listen to your Spider sense. She sounds like an attention whore who thrives like a vampire on male solicitude. Ignore her texts. Stay away from her haunts. This one is toxic.

Congratulations! Ever forward.

Gotcha. When you get your mail, look for a document that says “도시가스” in the header (“do-shi-gah-seu”). This means “city gas,” and it’s the heading on pretty much any gas bill. Meantime, you might want to ask your realtor to call the city-gas people to verify that they’re sending their bills to the correct address.
Paying via ATM isn’t easy if (1) you’re unfamiliar with the process, and (2) you’re unfamiliar with the language. I was lucky enough to have a Korean bank staffer in Daegu teach me the procedure. I used my phone’s video camera to record him has he went step by step, after which I practiced, practiced, and practiced some more. Learned a good bit of Korean vocabulary that way. It’s not that hard once you’ve got the procedure down pat, but the learning curve is a bitch. Another wrinkle: I wouldn’t mind teaching you the ATM procedure, but I’ve only ever done it in Korean. Ironically, I might get lost if I try to do it in English!

Is it possible you’ve now paid your gas bill twice? Is there a way for you to verify that you paid the bill only once? Can you go to the bank with a Korean-speaking friend (and your paperwork) to clear the air?

23.5K steps is great! Congratulations! And I envy your steady weight loss.

Sorry to hear about the fall. Korean paving stones are often treacherous that way.
So who’s this Maria? Spill it!

Fantastic! On average, how far is it, do you reckon, between bridges (in terms of either miles/kilometers or minutes walked)?

Well played.

As for that 1978 photo of you, I’m getting a definite “Noonan from Caddyshack” vibe.

Great pics, and a marvelous walk. You’re finding all sorts of Namsan trails that I knew nothing about.

S/he must be a coward if s/he isn’t brave enough to leave a comment in response. People often don’t want to take responsibility for the things they say.

Wow—leaving the big city, eh? Well, if I’m not mistaken, Pyeongtaek is still subway-accessible from Seoul, so I might just have to pay you a visit.

Is this the song with that indecipherable phrase “the pompatus of love” in it? Ah—I see that it is.
Weird synchronicity: my lunchtime crossword puzzle’s theme was “Joker,” and one of the answers was “Steve Miller Band.”
I look at the above photo and suddenly want to eat a peach, if you know what I mean. (My lady friend tells me that the Japanese equivalent is “eating a mango.” It’s dripping with juice either way, I suppose.)

The more things change, the more they remain the same
Congrats on the continued weight loss! As for your crush… she doesn’t sound worth it.

I admit that, as a teetotaler, I have difficulty relating. Bars just seem like more trouble than they’re worth. Then again, I’m a square, retiring introvert who doesn’t really like all the noise and crowds and drunken foolishness except in very small doses.

You must walk fast: that’s over 100 steps a minute! I’m lumbering along at about 92 steps a minute.

By the way, that sultry pose in the fourth photo—reflecting the pose of that underwear model later on—makes me want to look up your Grindr profile.

The name “Mactan” makes me think of black widows. I used to know all the Latin names for a wide range of God’s creatures. No longer. But that one stuck with me.

So your travel destination is a secret until you next write about it?
And damn, aren’t you a randy bastard.
