Congrats on the fire sale, and congrats on the niiiiiice, spacious office. I wouldn’t mind working in that, but I haven’t paid my dues yet. Give me another twenty years.

Ugh. Sorry to hear about the phone. I guess you can carry around a small Ziploc sandwich bag for when it rains.

Take it to the limit (part deux)
Congrats on the promotion, and a huge tip of the hat for circumnavigating Namsan, a feat I’ve never once performed. By now, you know that mountain inside and out. Amazing work.

So sad not to see any stye pics. All the same, get well soon. I haven’t had a stye in ages, but I do get the occasional eye infection, and I’ve got meds that I still use in such situations. Annoying, but temporary. Good luck!

Yo, Piece O’ Meat,
By the way, going from 150/90 to 140/80 is great. As you know “classic normal” blood pressure is 120/80, and the bottom number (diastolic, i.e., arterial pressure between heartbeats) is more significant than the top one (systolic, i.e., pressure during ventricular contraction). At my last checkup, I was 120/90, which is still high, but that’s way better than it had been before I started walking again (you don’t wanna know those numbers… let’s just say it’s a miracle that my heart hadn’t exploded).
Anyway, congrats on real, measurable improvement where it counts.

Congrats on the step count and the lady-glances. Catcalls can’t be far behind!

Scrolling down that rib-rack pic was like watching that first Star Destroyer roll overhead in “Star Wars.” Almost thought I’d see that rib rack chasing down a tiny rebel burger patty.
May the sauce be with you.
As for your yard sale: may it make you richer than Solomon.

At least I kept my head about me…
re: Duterte’s inauguration
I must’ve been reading an outdated article. Thanks for the update.
Then again… Wikipedia puts the inauguration date at June 30. Maybe Duterte is a time traveler…?

Oh, and I appreciate the evocation of Rudyard Kipling in your title.

I’ve heard that Duterte is a “hunt ’em down and kill ’em” type, so maybe we’ll see some progress under his watch, once he’s inaugurated.

Good question. In terms of cardio, I suspect that the staircase work, because it’s so purely staircase work, is likely just as beneficial as several hours of walking. Roughly speaking, twice up my staircase = one set of Namsan stairs.
In terms of caloric burn, however, I don’t think anything beats being on the trail for several hours. There’s simply no way that I can burn 2500 calories by going up my building’s staircase twice in 23 minutes.
I’m basically aiming for a balance between the two activities, but I confess that I like walking the trail way more. My problem is that, after doing nearly 35K steps, I’m pretty wiped out, and my feet hurt, which means I need to wait at least a day or two before I can do that again.
The schedule I’m aiming for, then, is just to do the creekside trail on Monday and Friday (5 hours’ walk), to do nothing on Sunday and Tuesday, and to devote Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday to building-staircase work.

Well! Since I’ve cut back on my long walks in order to ramp up intensity through more staircase work, I’d say you’re now walking almost twice as many steps per week as I do (I average 70K-80K steps/week). Congrats on attaining record highs with your step count, and on your continued weight loss. Obviously, you’re doing something right. The belly will melt away eventually, at which point horny women will be piling on top of you like rugby players.

Dr. Vallicella recently linked to Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Solitary Man.” Seems fitting.

Congrats on the continuing weight loss! 200 sounds like a great goal: it’s mine, too, but I’ve got farther to go than you, alas—another 65-70 pounds. Keep on pounding the pavement.
The Hillary pic is comedy gold. Someone’s going to order it to be painted over, though, I’m sure.

The bats were impressive, as was the eagle. Is the weather often overcast in the Philippines this time of year?

I can see a huge difference, Bruce, especially in the stomach. Keep on keeping on.

For what it’s worth, I think the crap you went through (and shouldn’t crap go through you?) would drive any man, no matter how laid-back, to use his “outside voice.”
500 pesos is—what—about $11? And 125 pesos is about $3? In your situation, I probably would’ve allowed myself to get wallet-raped, then would have grumbled about the experience afterward. Of course, $11 is 367% of $3, which means you’re being fleeced for 267%. So yeah, anger and action are justified.

Sorry you had to go through all that. Especially all the yelling you had to do—both at beggar kids and at duplicitous taxi drivers who think you’re just another stupid furriner they can take advantage of. Then, of course, there’s the prehistoric levels of Wi-Fi service…
I’m not sure the Philippines was all that good for your blood pressure.

Korea ought to be a relief after all this shit.

Can’t say that this narrative made the Philippines sound all that appealing. If anything, I get the impression that, for expats at least, the country is one giant Itaewon. Ick.

Good luck! I hope Manila has been less oppressive than Davao City was.

re: “When will the belly go away?”
I’ve heard an old saw before: “The first place you gain it is the last place you lose it.” I have no idea whether there’s any science to back that bit of folk wisdom up, but if my own lack of aesthetic progress is any indication, there may be some biological truth to the saying.

I don’t know how accurate your pedometer actually is, but I do like how it displays all pertinent information on one single screen instead of forcing you to flip from screen to screen, the way my pedometer does. Grrrr.

Choonae’s a cutie, Mr. Friend Zone.
As for 31K steps—that’s a mighty long walk! For me, that’s a bit more than 5 hours’ schlepping at a rough rate of 100 steps/minute (i.e., 6K steps/hr).
We’ll definitely have to try out Big Boy BBQ. It’ll be a Day of Misbehavior for both of us, I reckon. But it’ll also be a Day of No Regret!
