OK, sorry—I was calculating your walk time based on a 100 steps/minute rate. I see that your timer says 217 minutes, i.e., 3.6 hours. You must walk pretty damn fast: your step rate is 127 steps/minute, which is positively Korean. Yikes! Nearly 4 mph (5.8 kph)! What’s your hurry?

Very nearly 5 hours of walking! Are you sure 3 hours is your threshold? I think you’ve passed that limit quite a few times already.

Sounds like quite a walk! And at 24.5K steps, it seems you did substantially more than three hours’ schlepping—more like four hours. Awesome work.

Oh, to have a gun…

Please get yourself checked out. Thoroughly. And soon.

Wide-open spaces, it seems: room to breathe, room to think. I bet the air is somewhat cleaner, too. Enjoy it all while you can, I suppose… in just a few months, you’ll be off to your new existence in the PI.

Your non-native English-speaking readers will completely miss the Freudian dimension of what you wrote here.
Or maybe that’s the point.

I got a comment on my blog re: using duct tape to seal the large hole at the bottom of my backpack. I replied that duct tape is fantastically strong, but the adhesive is no good in moisture/humidity, and it only works when you get the tape to stick to itself. Your guy is going to have to go in there with some sort of sealant, I think. In the meantime, a temporary solution would be heavy weights (bricks? local stones?) to hold the square plate down. All you need to do is keep the hose pointed down into (and aligned with) the drainpipe, after all.

I’ll hoist a glass in your honor tonight, and I’ll definitely look you up in your new locale. May your future be a bright one.

How bad can life be when Green Bay itself is seeing you off?

Enjoy your upcoming stint in Pyeongtaek, and here’s hoping for a bright future in the Philippines. I have no doubt you’ll be missed by quite a few folks in Seoul. Congrats, meanwhile, on your record-breaking walk week!

This must be weird for you: a major transition before a major transition. Not sure how I’d cope if I were in your place. You seem to be coping admirably.

Thanks, Black Widow! I’m only hiking down to Busan (the “There and Back Again” title might be misleading); I’ll be taking the KTX bullet train back to Seoul (or my boss might be driving me back to Seoul). It’s 340 miles (or 550 km) one way, and that’s going to take me a little more than three weeks to do… as long as I manage to stay on schedule! My boss can’t give me two straight months off, so I can only do a one-way hike. But I think that’s going to be enough!

Grazie, grazie. I’m currently about 90 minutes out from today’s destination. It’s a gorgeous day for a hike.

I still owe you a dinner, but it looks as though we’ll have to have it in Pyeongtaek. I thought I’d be getting back early enough from my walk for us to meet up in Seoul, but I’ll be done on the 14th (at the earliest) and KTXing up to Seoul on the 15th (unless I’m driven up to Seoul on the 14th by a member of my welcoming party), which means a Seoul dinner is now out of the question. No matter… I’ll track your ass down somehow. Let’s keep in touch.

Exciting times ahead. Such a massive transition will indeed be a huge adventure. Rock and roll!

And I just saw this on “the Slingshot Channel” on YouTube:

Curtis,
I’ve consulted My Fitness Pal for calorie counts. It does indeed have a surprisingly comprehensive library of food, including Korean food—often specifying a brand name (like Ottogi, etc.). I once tried Map My Ride, but had bad luck with it. I suppose one’s mileage may vary. All in all, I’m OK with the Samsung pedometer I have; it serves my admittedly limited needs.

John,
About 75% of my walk gets done all at once, but the remaining 25% is done in bits and pieces earlier in the day: I take three mini-walks per day with my coworker during business hours. Each of those walks is good for about 1200 steps. Add another 1200-ish steps for the walking I do to get to work, and that’s nearly 5000 steps before I even set out on my big walk in the evening.
Starting maybe next week, I have to do my old, long route: the 33-staircase route along the Yangjae creek that amounts to around five hours’ schlepping. I need to be up around 5AM and on the road by 5:30. I start work late and end late in the day, so getting back home around 10:30AM, then showering and going to work, won’t be a problem. Those walks will bump my step count back over the 30K-step mark. It’s been a while since I walked that long and far, but a man’s gotta practice if he’s gonna do 600 kilometers.

Sorry to hear about the bad day(s), but congrats on a good walk. I did 21K steps tonight; will soon be lengthening my walks as my departure date gets closer.
I like all the numbers on your pedometer’s readout except for the calories. Alas, I have to call BS on over 4000 calories burned. An average person normally burns about 100 calories per mile walked, plus or minus 20 calories (see here). I certainly believe that you walked 12.3 miles because I’ve done that sort of walk myself, but I’d put your caloric expenditure at around 1200-1300 calories, tops.
Unless your pedometer is giving you a gross daily figure…? That might actually make sense: if you’re burning close to 3000 calories per day as part of your basal metabolic rate, a total of 4000+ calories would indicate over a thousand calories specifically burned through exercise. Is there a way to check on how your pedometer is measuring caloric burn?

“He said the lung nodule was 3 mm in size and could be from previous damage or could be a precursor to lung cancer. So yeah, I’ll get that checked next year for sure.”
I hope you can find equally good medical facilities in the Philippines.
The good news is that, if the doc thought this were full-blown cancer, he’d never tell you to wait a year to get checked up. He’s letting you keep the x-ray images of the nodule, yes?
