What’s cooking?

That breakfast egg is eerie in its roundness, like a full moon that can summon werewolves.

Congrats on 40K steps! You seemed to be saying “Never again” after your 50K-step walk, but I think 50K is a feat (feet?) you’ll be repeating soon. And just think: as you continue to walk these long distances, your feet will grow tough enough to kick through brick walls.

A river runs through it

“So, yesterday I get home and this car is completely blocking my driveway.”

Would it be worth your while to buy a couple cheap traffic cones?

27,000+ steps all told. Going to head out for another hour now and get that up to 35,000 for the day.

You, sir, are Randall Flagg, the Walkin’ Dude.

These days

“And the other night she told me she was sorry, she knows I just want to be friends for now, but she can’t help falling in love with me.”

Big, big warning klaxons going off in my head.

“…but like I told her, there’s no way I’d ever fall in love with someone I’ve never met in person. She said she understands that.”

You’re right not to get emotionally involved sight unseen. As for whether she really understands that… Loraine is a good cautionary tale.

That said… good luck!

Landslide

The stat that caught my eye:

“109.52
total miles
▲ 21.24 miles over last week”

I think we can guess where all those extra miles came from.

Great job, man.

Carefree Highway

Amazing achievement! (Or as they say in the video-gaming world: achievement unlocked!) Congratulations on hitting 52K steps! I was jokingly thinking that a 7:30AM start was a bit too late in the day, but since you walk faster than I do, you covered more ground in less time (about 7.4 hours in your case, so I wasn’t far off in my previous guesstimation). Awesome!

Interesting: your stats put you at approximately 50K steps and 25 miles, which is what my stats would be for such a trip (see my previous comment). This means that, while your speed is different from mine, our stride lengths must be almost the same. This also means that, were we to start walking together, you’d pull away in due course, thus forcing me to jog just to keep up.

I just did the math: you were walking about 3.3 mph, which means you’d pull away from me for sure, but fairly slowly.

On a more sober note: I don’t know about your FitBit, but my pedometer can’t be trusted when it comes to measuring walking distance: it’s about 10-20% too generous in its overestimation. Have you mapped your route on Naver or Google to see what the raw distance was? (I doubt the measurements would vary much.)

Anyway, a huge congratulations to you on this red-letter day. 50K steps is a great milestone, and now that the deed is done, no one can take that away from you.

C’est la vie

“Is 50,000 steps in a single day possible?”

Si, se puede. I walk at a rate of 100 steps a minute, i.e., 6000 steps an hour. My speed is a human-standard 3 mph/5 kph, so that’s almost exactly 2000 steps a mile. 50,000 steps is bigger by a factor of 25, so for me, 50,000 steps would equal about 25 miles, which is close to a marathon (26.2 mi.). This is easily doable for you, given that you walk much faster. A 25-mile/50K-step walk would take me between 8 and 9 hours; I imagine you could finish it in 7 hours or maybe less, depending on frequency and length of rest breaks.

Watch for blistering, which becomes a factor for me when I’m over the 5-hour threshold. It might be less of a factor for you, given that you weigh 60 or so pounds less than I do. A 50K-step walk is something I did rather often this past spring during my big trek; normally, in my everyday life, reaching 40K is cause for celebration because it’s so rare. My best-ever day, during the trek, was over 60K steps (61,812 steps on May 15, two days before the end of the walk), and my feet were screaming by the end. I rested all of May 16 as a result.

I assume you’re planning to walk a loop or some sort of path that ends where you start (as opposed to walking to some point, spending the night, then walking back the next day). Whatever you do, enjoy! 50K steps is a good and worthy goal, and averaging 26K steps/day now is pretty damn impressive.

Good luck!

(By the way… are you thinking of hiking from Seoul to Busan? As things are now, you’re basically in good enough shape to do it. All you need to do is check the toughness of your feet after a few hikes that are 6 hours or longer.)

A feast among friends

The feast looks fabulous. Happy Belated Thanksgiving!

Hell yeah!

Congrats! As soon as I saw this post’s title and first line, I knew it: “He passed 40K,” I thought. Good for you, man. How’re your feet?

A snowy Thanksgiving

In that one selfie above, does your hat really say “VAPES”? That’s hilarious if so.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

No ifs, ands, or butts about it…

Well, I’m sorry to hear about the BPH, but I’m happy to know that you’re otherwise normal. Be glad you’ve become such a dedicated walker: you’re avoiding a whole slew of other health problems that normally afflict 60-somethings. Age comes with increasing burdens, but exercise is definitely the way to stave off many of them. Rock on!

Pride goeth before the fall

As the saying goes: “The past is history, the future’s a mystery, but this moment is a gift, which is why they call it the present.” Corny, but Zen-like in its truth.

Walk on!

125 steps per minute and 3.6 miles per hour is much, much faster than I move. No wonder about the weight loss. Congrats!

I need to sic you on the Korean chicks who constantly beat my ass on the bike path. Their speed is always roughly in the 3.5-4.0 mph region. I always think of these hyper-motivated ladies as powered by anger.

En avant!

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

What a week

Duuuuuude. You were warned, again and again, by many different sympathetic parties. Based on what happened the first time with Loraine, it was obvious, to those of us outside the situation, that there was no fundamental trust there. If you don’t have any trust, you can’t have love. While I’ve seen some well-intended folks argue on Loraine’s behalf, the fact remains that her confusion doesn’t add up to trustworthiness. So, now you’re free! Go find someone worthy of you, and leave Loraine to her… Kev. Always a new horizon, my friend.

Side note: I find that anger and sadness are both fantastic for weight loss. It’s when I’m happy and bubbly that the potential for sin is greatest.

Best comment ever

Just want what’s best for you, man. If I insulted you in any way, I apologize.

I’ll think of something

Well… that’s why I privately suggested someone ugly—or a guy—as your caretaker. If you truly are done with the love thing, then it shouldn’t matter to you whom you hire. If, on the other hand, you really are looking for the potential for romance, then you’ll have to be honest with yourself about that fact and include it as a possibility in whatever writeup you create for your online profile. My intuition is that, if you’re still looking for a good-looking woman to be your caretaker, you want much more than an employee. In terms of breaking the samsaric cycle, I see two ways: (1) be honest that what you’re really looking for is a life-companion who can offer you love along with support, or (2) be true to the idea that you’ve sworn off the love thing, having been hurt too many times—and really stick with that mindset. Either of these paths is better than the one that leads right back to the same pain.

I’m reminded of the hilarious foot-massage dialogue between Jules and Vincent in “Pulp Fiction”: Jules tries to argue that foot massages don’t mean anything, that they’re perfectly innocent, but Vincent traps him by asking, “Would you give a guy a foot massage?” Jules has no argument, so his response is, “Fuck you.” No matter how much we fool ourselves, foot massages mean something every time we give them.

But when I read this:

“Truth is I’m really not ready to engage emotionally with anyone until I’ve worked my way through the betrayal of Loraine.”

—I get the feeling that “emotional engagement” is indeed the thing you’re looking for. For whatever reason, you’re convinced that you can’t hack this life alone, that you need a companion, not merely an assistant. If that’s the case, then you CAN’T stipulate that your next caretaker needs to understand there’s no potential for love/romance because there obviously is. So whatever you’re looking for will not be a strictly employer-employee thing, and whichever woman you finally select will need to know that. The lady might end up being a Machiavellian gold-digger, but she still deserves honesty.

My two scents, said the skunk.

Aftermath

The Hindu concept of life is that it’s a painful wheel of existence called samsara. We’re chained to this repetitive, revolving wheel through our actions (karma). The object of the game is to gain enough wisdom about the nature of things so as to escape an eternity of repeating the wheel of life-events, again and again, all thanks to our accidental or deliberate unwisdom. Good luck as you examine deep causes and do your best to find liberation from the wheel (moksha) and bliss in your life (ananda). Every day is a new chance to walk a different path!

FUCK ME!

Damn, man. Women are your kryptonite. Don’t know what to say except that I’m sorry to read of this turn of events. Turd of events, more like. Ugh.

Hang in there. You can weather this.

Let her go

Well, Christ, I hope Loraine has dumped Kev (as much as it pains me for a lovely woman to dump any Kevin)!

Buy me a drink!

Since I don’t drink, I know nothing about any sort of bar culture, but I get the feeling that there’s an undercurrent of sadness at many of these places, juicy-themed or not. Of course, I’ve also heard tales of rollicking, raucous Irish pubs and the like—places that are happy hubs of local culture—so it can’t be all gloom and doom…

I don’t know

If only Koreans listened to the wisdom of ol’ Uncle Hunter. This is a country in which people live in fear of what others may think of them… then they turn around and act like utter assholes, as if they don’t give a shit what anyone thinks of them. So confusing.

I’m glad your friend will (likely) be getting her pay. And you’re right not to apologize to that bitch of an owner. Fuck her. (No, not literally.)

An atypical Sunday

It all looks great. For some reason, though, it was the perfectly cooked and very lightly charred garlic bread that caught my eye. Much envy here. This must have been an awesome meal, and with awesome company, no less.
