Well, good luck buying supplies. May you find everything you need. My guru Styx has been saying to concentrate on non-perishables (rice, couscous, quinoa, pasta, quick oatmeal, etc.) and canned goods. Add long-storage items like butter (good while fridged), various herbs and bottled sauces, and huge hunks of meat that you can freeze. In all likelihood, though, all this super-prepping is going to turn out to be for nothing. Only a few dozen deaths in the States, and even South Korea’s death toll is tiny compared to its population. A lot of people might get sick, but very, very few are going to die. So relax, have fun fitting surgical masks on young boobs, and enjoy life.

I think some people are just born more energetic, goal-directed, and driven. I’m one of those easily contented people who don’t seek after fame or fortune or power, even at a low level, but there are people out there who simply can’t sit still, and who have to keep moving, keep doing things, in order not to feel useless or in a rut. Such people live under a compulsion, and asking them “What’s your secret?” will get you answers that are at least partially untrue: they’ll tell you that “I decided long ago to work hard” or “I had a realization that led me to where I am today” or some such… and maybe there’s some truth to that, but the unconscious compulsion is what really motivates them to act how they act and to do what they do. I know that flies in the face of the conservative notion that we all have free will and can determine our destinies, but that too is only partially true. I believe the biologists when they say personality (and possibly character) is about 50% genetic. Some of us are just born with an unwavering inner compass. Others of us, like yours truly, still don’t know what we want to be when we grow up. We’re born with certain wiring, and a degree of rewiring is possible, but the fundamental wiring is, well, hard-wired. You make do with what you’ve got.

So is it already the hot season in the PI? Or is it always the hot season? Daytime temps in Korea are warming up, now… nighttime can still get below freezing, so we’re in that weird time of year when we haven’t fully transitioned over to spring yet. Give it another two or three weeks.

It’s actually super-easy to make your own cornbread as long as you can find cornmeal or masa harina (corn flour, not to be confused with cornstarch). Brown sugar is basically white sugar plus molasses, which gives your recipe a bit more savoriness. Let me know if you want a simple recipe. Gathering the ingredients doesn’t take much more work than buying a boxed cornbread mix.

Two things:
1. Cornbread seems to have a “high sugar tolerance,” for lack of a better term. You can dump a ton of sugar into the batter before you start to taste any real sweetness in the final product. I think I’ve mentioned before that Costco, in the States, puts out a cornbread pre-mix that is my favorite cornbread recipe. And it’s sweet. I shudder to think about how much sugar they had to dump into the mix to get it that sweet.
2. Regarding COVID-19 and hot climates: one of the big puzzles that scientists all over the globe are dealing with is whether this virus is seasonal, like the typical flu. If it does turn out to be seasonal, which we’ll all know in a few months, then that’ll be great news. Come summer, the epidemic will be burning itself out. If not (and I’m betting on “not”), then we’re in for a long period of tribulation. That said, stay optimistic, exercise common sense, and don’t listen to those idiots who say that putting more alcohol into your bloodstream will protect you from the virus. An alcohol-based disinfectant, to be effective, has to be at least a 70% solution. You’ll be dead long before your blood-alcohol content reaches 1%. (This chart says death is possible at around 0.4% BAC.)

Sorry—let me revise “quite a few times” to just “a few times.” And it’s not exactly the same error each time, but it’s a bold/italics-formatting error for sure. Hint: look at your recent “Hodgepodge” post, under the picture of the woman cuddling the bear. Also: “A Walk in the Countryside” (26 Feb), 12th picture down. That one’s a biggie.

As for the Grammar Day post… the question I’m asking myself is: how many of those errors are actually grammatical errors?
Grammar = sentence structure, tense control, word order, subject-verb agreement, verb conjugation, etc.
Mechanics = spelling, capitalization, punctuation
Diction = word choice/usageE.g., using “they’re” when you mean “their” is a diction error. Come to think of it, pretty much all of the errors in that post are diction errors!
Yeah, yeah—I know the post was meant in jest and not supposed to be over-analyzed. But that’s me… always the turd in the punch bowl.

What do you mean what do I mean?
Technically, when you write “Annyeong haseyo?” in an email or letter, you use a question mark because the expression is a question: “Do you do peaceably?”
Annyeong = peace(ful)
haseyo = from hada, “to do”Modern Korean intonation makes the question sound like a statement, but grammatically, it’s still a question.
All the same, that was an interesting linguistic adventure.

As for the girl who’s more my type: fourth photo from the top, bottom row, farthest left, pinkish bra strap visible. She’s a cutie, even with her loose belly. I prefer a woman with a slightly flabby tummy to a woman with Schwarzenegger-style six-pack abs. Only caveat is that she’s way, way too young.

It’s definitely “for fuck’s sake,” just as it’s “for God’s sake.” There’s some singular/plural wiggle room, but it’s the “sake” that can change, not the “fuck” or the “God.” No one seriously says “for fucks’ sake” or “for gods’ sake,” unless they live in the polytheistic world of Battlestar Galactica. But people who speak a certain dialect do say “for God’s sakes.” That’s an acceptable change.

Do you ever have to contend with leeches during your water crossings? I imagine they’re not a problem when you’re dealing with vigorously running water, but what about in those areas where the water is either slow-running or stagnant?
