Yeah, the hill climbs are a reminder of my deteriorated physical condition. Age plays a part, but letting myself go weight-wise has consequences.
Yes, I’m definitely wanting to be cremated and have the Hash scatter my ashes on trail. If they choose to flush me down a toilet, I won’t care.
Another day, another hill to climb. One way or the other.

Perhaps neighbor Matt considers the daily drama between you and the girlfriend free entertainment. I hope you enjoyed your solo date with the leftover vodka. Better you than her. We all get the life we choose, and it seems you’ve gone all in for this one. Good luck with that!

I hope you support the right to bear arms, Drain…

Kev, regarding that “regular stop” photo, hollow block construction is pretty much the standard here, one step up from the less expensive bamboo walls you commonly see in the boonies. I’m not familiar with any stories about the house—it’s in a neighborhood of similar structures. The baby mama who lives there with her candy-lovin’ kids is a cutie, though.
Oh yeah, our family campouts were old school…we all shared one tent. Went fishing in the river, then cooked the catch over an open fire for dinner. Kernville was several hours from home, and us boys rode in the back of the Jeep pickup to get there. We had a family reunion there several years before my parents passed, but we stayed in a motel.
Your camping memory reminded me of the time my older brother and I went on a backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park. The ranger warned us to be on the lookout for bears. Sure enough, that first afternoon, when we were setting up camp, a big brown bear walked by. During the night, we heard screams from the campsite next to ours: “There’s a bear in the tent!” The next morning, we decided we’d seen enough and hiked back out.

That’s quite a story, Thompson. Glad you lived to tell about it. You seem to be a glutton for punishment, or maybe your girlfriend satisfies a masochistic craving. Just to be safe, I recommend you check under the bed for any furries!

Kev, yes, Swan said Miel means honey. Lots of Tagalog words are rooted in Spanish.
Well, when I woke up yesterday, there was one uncut cake in the fridge, so there must have been enough for everyone.
My goal is to survive another 15 years or so, provided I’m still able to do enough to enjoy life. We’ll see how that works out for me. Swan wants to be by my side to take care of me in my dotage, so I’ll gift her that at least.

Another day, another adventure. Next time your gal feels worthless, reassure her by saying, “No woman is totally worthless…she can always serve as a bad example.” Besides, as long as she comes home with beer and wine, it is all worth it, right?

Thompson, at least you never have a dull moment when the girlfriend is around. I don’t think she can be called an “ex” anymore. Keep on living life on your terms and be willing to change the terms if you want a different life.

Yeah, I didn’t eat the menudo or igado, but the Filipinos smother their rice with it.
HaHa, I didn’t know about Joey Chestnut, but when your fame comes from eating hot dogs it is unwise to piss off the sponsor.
It was a good party. As usual, folks self-segregated by race and sex. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Thompson, your girlfriend sucks (when you let her). She fetches your booze. And she provides inspiration to write about your misery. You could do worse! Although the way she gets her rocks off does sound painful.
Guess it is up to you to decide whether your life is better with or without her. Good luck making the right call!

Kev, yes, only one enchilada and nothing on the side. Some beans and/or rice would have been nice.
HaHa! I hadn’t realized I’d posted that old photo multiple times. I’ve updated the caption to include names. I’m the middle child (John Mark), my older brother is Keith Randall, and my little brother is Gregory Lee.
Yes, for the most part, those years in Korea were the best of my life. I enjoyed my work and the Seoul lifestyle. I was happiest before Jee Yeun left me. My final year in Pyeongtaek was wasted lamenting the past and dreaming of the future. I regret not living in the moment and fully appreciating the beauty of my life there. Sometimes it is only in looking back that you realize all that you had.

Kev, the ascent to Black Rock isn’t all that long or steep, certainly nothing like Easter Mountain.
In that case, liberal thinking must be like a broken clock…right twice a day.
Yeah, I recall that August 15 was the day the Japanese just walked out of Korea as an act of kindness. Or so it seemed.
I saw Tombstone way back when and enjoyed it, but like everything else in my muddled brain, it’s a faded memory. Would enjoy reliving the experience through one of your amazing reviews!

Free vodka and pussy, you could do worse, Thompson! Maybe she’ll even clean up the mess she made when she left. And if you are lucky, she’ll make you a sandwich when she’s done. Count your blessings!

Brian, he came into Wet Spot briefly last night. Apparently, he likes to drink and then walk out without paying. They cut him off after one beer. The manager says he was wounded as an American servicemember in Somalia and is a little off mentally. I hope he finds the help he needs.

Kev, the most common problem with ATMs is they tend to run out of cash on weekends/holidays. I think the issue Tuesday may have been a slow internet connection that wouldn’t connect with my USA bank account. And no, I don’t have a Philippine bank account–they are hard to get on a tourist visa. Don’t think I’d want one anyway. Once a week at the ATM for pocket money and wire transfers for everything else is how I roll. Of course, that makes me vulnerable to the whims of the ATMs, but that’s life here. Relax. Take a deep breath. Accept the Filipino way.
Well, I guess one way I’m better is no longer being a whore. I won’t lie and say that I never think back to those wild days, but then I think about having a gal by my side who genuinely wants what is best for me and takes care of my health and emotional needs, and I know I’m a lucky man.

I in-vested three hundred with the Hash
Brian, yeah, I can see the potential benefits, but I’m still trying to find that sweet spot.
I’m facing the fact that I’m old, and some of my complaints are just part of the aging process. I’m still not going down without a fight, though!

A walk through your apartment sounds like quite the adventure, Thompson. It seems you are living life on your terms, so do what makes you happy!

We still have a couple of runners in our Hash, but us stumblers are in the majority.
The lighting in Red Bar gives everything a reddish tint. I’m not sure what Scott used to filter that out.
I had to get cardiologist clearance before going under for surgery, and the heart was fine. Or so I was led to believe.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure my current breathing issues are COPD-related. I just need to minimize the impact as best as I am able and get on with living my life, such as it is. I haven’t heard of artificial hearts, it sounds freaky to live a pulse-free life.

The heart is a lonely Hunter, Thompson. Enjoy your life while you have it.
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

Kev, no, it is not a problem. We are logistically limited in the amount of candy we can carry, so the challenge is to not disappoint any kids who are looking forward to their ration of sweets.
And you are correct; I do not think the Philippines will be impacted by the pending Asian population implosion. The country is full of horny and fertile young women who don’t use birth control, and abortion is strictly illegal.

Thompson, that sounds like a nightmare experience. It’s another good reason to stick with unopened cans and to be a sipper, not a guzzler. Cigarettes are not good for you, whether inhaled or swallowed.

Kev, those horns on most carabao are huge–it would be like bringing a knife to a swordfight. I doubt I could outrun one, either. They are usually on a rope, so it is your fault if you foolishly get within range. I’ll stay alert around them and hope for a better outcome than my fellow Hashers.
Given your views on alcohol, an argument could be made that human sacrifices are indeed occurring at The Rite Spot.
Nope, I’m gonna take my virgin ass to the grave, thank you very much!

Kev, most meetings don’t include beer, so maybe that helped it go smoother.
Yes, there was a time when I was just getting started at 8 p.m. Those days are gone for me now. Compounding the problem was my earlier-than-normal start–it made eight seem even later.
Fauci should be made an example of, just as he did to all those folks who foolishly believed he had their interests at heart. He may be the worst scoundrel of the century. So far, anyway.

Kev, I still have some taste, just not as intense as it once was.
I think I worded what happened with the invite poorly. Swan said she had been asked to come, and she wanted me to go with her. I’d also been asked by the owner but hadn’t committed to doing so. Since Swan wanted to attend, I chose to go with her. I still had the option to decline.
Thanks for the links. I remembered that song because I saw a cartoon with the Ah-Ha character–a man catches his wife in bed with him and shouts, “Ah Ha!”

Brian, I’m not sure when it happened. My nose was blocked by the overgrown nodules and I couldn’t breathe through it (or smell). Then, after the surgery, I could breathe again, but I still couldn’t smell. I still have some taste, but probably not as robust as in the past.

Mike, it’s not like that. She suggested another option, and I understood her reasoning. We both went along with it. At the end of the night, we also agreed it had been a waste of time. Lesson learned.
