Rhythm and Tues

Kev, I agree that DaKudos is one of the worst names ever. The new owner is calling it “Fox’s Beach Resort,” but most of the signage hasn’t been changed yet.

Yes, my dream of a “do-over” eternal life is based on taking my lessons learned back with me. No point in repeating the same mistakes; I want to find new ways to fuck up. The main attraction is to answer the “what if” questions had I taken a different path at the crossroads of my life. I haven’t really thought through what my ten commandments might be. Let me think about it and get back to you.

I’m not a Facebook fanatic; it’s more a tool I use than anything else. I upload photos from my phone to FB, then download them on my laptop for posting on the blog. FB has some entertainment value, like when I post memes that drive the lefties crazy or, should I say, expose their insanity. And it’s okay for seeing what other people I know are up to. The messenger app also comes in handy.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Kung Fu Panda before; it’s nice to know where those words of wisdom come from. I also use them as a joke: Forget the past; it is history. Forget the future; it’s a mystery. And forget the present, I didn’t get you one.

I’ve already forgotten more than I ever knew. And new tricks don’t come easy for this old dog. I’m just going to try and focus on the moment and appreciate it for what it is. I missed out on a lot of happiness by failing to do so throughout my life.

“I drink Zero! Everyday.” I added that “Everyday” on a whim just before publishing the post. I’d write it as every day next time. But I suspect there is something else I’m missing. When it comes to writing, I’m good at being a bad example!

Nice to hear from you again, Thompson. Yep, In a weird way, social media gives us eternal life. Although my blog will die when I’m not around to pay the hosting fees for the server and domain. I’m pretty sure I won’t care at that point.

The roundabout way

Kevin, don’t make me re-read that boring post looking for the error!

Yep, Joy has grown some since then.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 28/May/2025 @ 7:41 am

Brian, good to know I’m not totally worthless! Thanks for finding that. I guess the domain didn’t generate the revenue whoever stole it from me was hoping for.

A memorable day

Yep, another trail I managed to survive. Keep ’em coming!

Cherry, you’ll be happy to know that unfried beans were a menu choice too.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 27/May/2025 @ 7:52 am

Razor, are you trying to curry Cherry’s favor?

That’s Mad, Arab. Thanks for sharing.

A skip, a miss, and a hop

Kev, yes I know the difference between “rending” and “rendering.” I’m not sure why my fingers didn’t type it the way my brain told them to. I’m glad you got my intended meaning.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 27/May/2025 @ 7:58 am

I resemble that remark!

Daeguowl, When Kevin points out yet another grammatical error, I vow to do better as I ponder my mistakes while enjoying a beer.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 27/May/2025 @ 7:55 am

You guys make some great points. As a transactionalist myself, I tend to see relationships in that light. However, Kevin’s example of trading places with his mother was heart-rendering. Just because I’ve never experienced that kind of love doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I think it comes down to the character of the individual. If you are wired that way, you won’t be able to give or get “true” love.

Kevin, The confusion was mainly my fault…I should not have assumed they’d post updates on Facebook like our Hash does. I should have made an effort to find the webpage. Also, Angeles Hash doesn’t seem to consider outsiders in their planning…Apparently, the Beach Run is always a hike + a bar hop. Now I know. But yeah, there’s no excuse for why they sent me faulty info on the starting point and never updated me. The AC Hasher I talked to said I was responsible for looking for updates on the webpage. Oh well, lesson learned.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I’ve proven over the years that I’m inherently a selfish bastard, and one of the manifestations of that is that so many of my relationships have been transactional. I’m not sure a leopard can change the color of its spots, but I’m trying.

I do understand the basic concept of the comma splice rule (a semicolon or conjunction should join two independent clauses). I’m just sloppy and/or lazy and don’t pay as much attention to the rules as I should. That’s apathy, not ignorance! 🙂

The long way

HaHa! Grammarly doesn’t have ALL the answers! I saw the mistake, but didn’t remember the name for it…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 25/May/2025 @ 1:03 pm

No, I’m not really looking forward to the rains. It makes it cooler, but everything else is a pain in the ass.

Handing out sweets to kiddies does seem a tad Satanic…that’s why I let Swan handle it most of the time…

I was high at the time; I don’t remember! 🙂 The teacher said she appreciated my honesty, and I didn’t get sent to the principal’s office, so there’s that.

It’s a compound sentence with a comma splice, so I need a semicolon to separate the thoughts. I guess an “and” would have worked, too.

Brian, I use a 50 peso to the dollar rate when I do conversions in my head, so as long as that holds up I’m good. I saw it go as low as 43 when I was a tourist. It was good when it rose briefly to 58, but no one expected that to last.

Just another Thirstday

Brian, we are booked for a trip to Da Nang, Vietnam in July. There might be some drama to deal with between now and then.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 24/May/2025 @ 8:16 am

Kev, I’m not seeing anything “lucky” about having Jee Yeun as my wife. She destroyed the life I truly loved. I’ll never recover from that. That person I was is dead. These days, I just make the best of what I have left.

Swan deserves better than what I am. I’m sorry for her.

Around here

Kev, yes, I told that tree urine for a drenching!

Spiraling is a good way to put it. And I’m blessed to be repeating what I am rather than what I was. The end of the road is ever nearer, so I’m going to try and enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.

It’s the right time of the day…

Nice to hear from you again, James. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, without the stories of debauchery in the bars, one-night stands, and transactional relationships, the blog has become both a bore to write and for others to read. How much can you say about a candy walk, floating bars, and the sunset?

It’s been shocking to see that I’d go weeks at a time between posts during my drunken Itaewon life all those years ago. These days, the blog is as much a diary as anything, and I try to post something even when I have nothing worthy to write about. I’m very grateful for the handful of readers that remain!

Yes, I met Joy when she was hired for her first job in a bar that no longer exists five years ago or so. She was a hottie back then, but she has grown with time. I guess those weekly feedings of mine haven’t helped in that regard. She has a good heart, though.

Thanks again for being a faithful reader here at LTG!

Kev, glad it wasn’t worse. That BP thing seems to be a common factor in all the cases I’ve heard about.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 22/May/2025 @ 4:25 pm

Kev, I recalled your descriptions of dodging cars on the East Coast while walking the highway to Barretto. Crazy drivers here make it worse.

Looking back on those early years in Itaewon has been a little shocking. Copious amounts of full-strength beer AND shots of the strong stuff were the norm, and I frequently kept at it until the wee hours of the morning. I’m a lightweight these days. Home by 8 p.m. and I only drink low-alcohol brews. I know, as a teetotaler, you don’t see it that way, but I’m far from the drunk I used to be. When my lifestyle catches up with me, I will nod and accept your “I told you so” without remorse. More and more, I find it hard to deny myself life’s pleasures, knowing that my time left to enjoy them is rapidly slipping away.

“Spot the error!”
Ah, since it was something I was thinking and not asking, the question mark is inappropriate.

Here’s hoping your buddy’s wife will not suffer any lingering impacts.

Brian, yes indeed! I am much more inclined to help down on their luck locals than foreigners who moved here without sufficient funding. That said, sometimes a bad accident or unforeseen health issues can destroy what seemed like sufficient savings account and render one at the mercy of his neighbors. Fortunately, I haven’t seen that happen often in my neck of the woods.

A stroke of luck

Yeah, it seems so obvious now looking back…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 21/May/2025 @ 3:08 pm

Kev, I’m not sure what the triggers for TIA are, but neither of the two recent victims have any extreme lifestyle habits I’m aware of, such as excessive drinking or obesity. Before his attack, Scott mentioned suffering from low blood pressure and Rob told me he had taken an increased dose of BP meds before hiking, so maybe that’s a connection. But yeah, these two cases, then seeing the NY Times article gives off a bit of pandemic vibe.

In the groove

Kev, I’m still a proud American and hope there will be more pride to come. My reluctance to return to live there is mostly because I find the typical lifestyle boring and vanilla compared to life in Asia.

HaHa! I that’s the only French I ever manage to learn, my conversations will all be short and sweet!

» Posted By John McCrarey On 20/May/2025 @ 9:57 am

Brian, I’m pretty set in my ways here now, so it would take a lot to convince me to move out of my comfort zone. War with China would certainly be motivation to leave. If I were to suffer a heartbreak I might flee from the memories of happier days. If I stayed in the PI, La Union would be my Plan B. If I left the country, I’d likely give Vietnam a try.

Tommy, No idea, I didn’t notice it when I was there. If I had to speculate, I’d guess acne.

Drain, that’s the sad truth…the Arizona Resort, including the floating bar, is for sale. In the Facebook post, the owner admits it needs someone on the ground who can restore the operation to its former glory. I used to be a regular diner at Arizona, but these days the restaurant seems devoid of customers because the food quality has gone way down. Good luck to whomever buys this place.

Saturday in the park

Kevin, in those old posts I was using the wrong term for those occasions when I lost consciousness and hit the floor. Yeah, I have had my share of alcohol infused “blackouts” over the years, but I’m glad the incidents that left me in stiches haven’t recurred.
