Thanks for your support, Brian. I think context makes a difference when it comes to hyphenating ‘cross country’. “Mom, I’m driving cross-country tonight.” “Mom, I made the cross country team!” What say you, Mr. Kim?

Brian, I’m not sure if the times are changing, but I’m pretty set in my ways. In high school, it was always written “cross country.” As in, “The cross country team will be competing in the Pasadena event against numerous other Southern California schools.” What’s next? Base-ball and foot-ball?
I just did a search for the definition of cross country running and about half of them don’t use a hyphen. Go figure.

Kevin, I’m a Substack subscriber because, as a friend, I want to support your endeavor. Try as I might, I am, and always have been, a failure grammatically. I can see now that “grocery-shopping” should have been hyphenated. I’m a little confused about where I screwed up the second sentence. Cross-country? Except I’m referring to the sport of cross country running and was never hyphenated when I participated. Or maybe I should have written high-school. Yeah, I’m a waste of time.
Yeah, but avoiding that bad decision in high school might have presented me with the opportunity to fuck up in new ways I’ve never thought of. Oh well.
Yeah, unless the US government shuts down, I’ll be alright. I want to be a bit more responsible this year and set aside the rent each month so I have the lump sum ready next time.

Yvon, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and concerns regarding Swan with me. Rest assured, Swan does not overindulge (usually no more than two glasses of wine per night). I also always give her the option of not accompanying me to the bars, but she seems to enjoy herself.
Just so you know, Swan’s previous love was a restaurant/bar manager. They were together for seventeen years before he sadly passed away. So, Swan was visiting the bars with him long before she met me.
I sent you an email and would love hearing from you about how we met all those years ago (ah, the email address didn’t work. Feel free to add me on FB if you’d like to get reacquainted.) My memory is not what it once was, but I loved my time on Yongsan and always enjoyed my visits to the Dragon Hill Lodge.

Kevin, The Corona Hash deems itself “the best Hash in the world.” I disagree with that sentiment, but I will concede that they do have an impressive logo. I’m a little unclear on the ancient history of the PI, but I seem to recall that Polynesia was part of that story. I remember seeing the Jangseung poles at the start of one of the trails leading to the top of Namsan.
I don’t drop my pants for the ice, but I’d reckon about half the dudes do. Only a couple of women show their ass, but I always appreciate the effort!
The medication has significantly reduced my coughing and hacking up phlegm. What I do spit is clear instead of yellow, so that’s a good sign.

Kevin, I certainly don’t mind contrary opinions, but yeah, I come from a beer-drinking heritage. I’ve tried other types periodically, but they don’t work for me. I drink beer in moderation, but the “hard stuff” hits me unexpectedly. Most of my falling-down-drunk incidents have been when I switched from beer.
Anyway, I’m not pretending beer is good for me, but it is a part of my life I enjoy, and at this stage I plan to go out doing what I like.

Kevin, I had a colonoscopy; now I have a semicolon. I should have used it in the sentence you referenced.
Regarding the restaurants, there aren’t many that feature foods from the nation of the proprietor. In fact, almost all the eateries have menus that include a wide variety of Western, Asian, and Filipino selections. I tried to think of an exclusively Filipino restaurant, and other than street food, there aren’t any.

Kevin, I did the review as instructed, and now I see the error of my ways. The proper way to write the sentence is without either a comma or a semicolon because I’ve created a compound predicate.
Will I remember this lesson tomorrow? Miracles do happen, I suppose.

Jürgen, not sure why you care. I drink beer when I’m out. I don’t drink beer at home. I don’t drink beer early in the day. I choose when I drink and how much. That’s not severe alcoholism.

Kevin, hmm. When I saw that lesson, I thought I was better at seeing comma splices than most other errors. Honestly, I’m not seeing it here. Are you saying a semicolon instead of a comma after the hike? Well, I guess those are two independent clauses, so that must be it. I stand corrected.
Or do I? Maybe the mistake is that I don’t need a comma OR a semicolon. Damn, now I need a beer.

Kevin, it was more like a refill of a previous prescription. The diagnosis was the same as the previous one pertaining to fluid retention in the lungs.
I’ll take them for a week, and if things don’t clear up, I’ll go back to the pulmonary specialist for an updated diagnosis.

Kevin, no, I pretty much diagnosed myself. The phlegm buildup was the prelude to last year’s breathing issues, and I wanted to nip that shit in the bud. I asked Dr. Jo what meds the pulmonary doctor had put me on to clear my lungs, and that’s what she gave me, along with an antibiotic. I already seem to be hocking and coughing less. If this doesn’t work, I’ll go back to the pulmonary doc.
What was weird about the leg was that the pain and weakness came out of nowhere. And 24 hours later, it was pretty much completely gone. Hopefully never to return!

Brian, no, it was the same as what I experienced before that may have been sciatica-related. Whatever it was, it has now dissipated, and I’m almost back to normal.

Dan, I can only speak to the Philippines, but there is definitely a litter culture here. I’m not just talking about dropping candy wrappers on the ground; I’ve seen people throwing bags of garbage into the river. Which then wind up in the ocean. Whenever we have a high tide, it is amazing to see the garbage left behind on the beach. And yeah, it is mostly plastic bottles.
