My way was the highway

Koko, I will survive the typhoon. Thanks for your support.

Gary is married man and he used to own a bar in Angeles. You girls missed your chance.

Floribeth, Carrot cake is my favorite, but it doesn’t make me longer. Sorry.

Doing a bypass

Kevin, as a kid, my mom would make liver and onions for dinner a couple of times a month. The rule at our house was you stayed at the dinner table until you’d cleaned your plate. I couldn’t stand the taste of liver, so when she wasn’t looking, I’d drop it to one of our dogs under the table.

It’s probably the onions you don’t like.

Dan, I’ve never had pickled herring, so I can’t say whether I like it or not. The others I never want to eat again.

Floribeth, Google translate is your friend: You need mince for meatballs

Not to mince words about it.

Unconnected

Kevin, I see what you did there. Nice job! I will think of ways to say things without that glyph, too. I’ll just act as if my board tab is not functioning as it should. That might work, don’t you think, Kivin?

Thanks for sharing your insights, Brian.

It’s been seven years since I’ve been “home.” A lot has changed since then. That last trip left me feeling depressed; seeing my old house and the places I had shared with my wife were like salt in a wound. Since that time, things have gone south within the family. At this stage of my life, I honestly don’t want to deal with the drama. Maybe I’ll feel differently in the future.

Well, I didn’t get nasty or loud; I just said that I’d been given the coupon (they are dated and only good for a week) on Friday night and that I was here to use it. I guess Whiskey Girl’s position was that, since they didn’t bother to show up (despite being listed as a competitor), they had no obligation to honor the raffle prize. I was fully prepared to walk away, but then the manager relented. Anyway, Whiskey Girl has become a shithole, and I will never return. I got my free beers as my way of saying, “fuck you.”

As for popping the Asia bubble, I’m glad to be here. I read about the crap going on in Europe and Down Under and have no desire whatsoever to visit those shitholes. If I still had a sense of adventure, I wouldn’t mind checking out South America. I’ve never been on a cruise, but maybe that’s a good “old man” alternative. I do recall, when I visited the Bahamas, how much I hated it when a cruise ship came into port: masses of tourists swarming the streets, ruining it for the rest of us. We’ll see what the future brings.

Nope, no offense taken whatsoever. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Dr. Greg, I ain’t afraid of no typhoon. They can take my electric, but not my power.

Fair to middling

Kevin, that makes sense. Almoranus is German, and his co-Hare, Vienna Sausage, is, well, Austrian.

Paploo, easy for you to say.

Blessed be the day

Kevin, tell your Aunt Flo from Redlands that I never even noticed the period.

Rockin’ on!

Terence, No, that wasn’t Myleen’s. We do go there once in a while. Best Mexican food in town!

RIP SOB

Aloysius, I was just listing the teams I used to watch and enjoy for old time’s sake. Nope, Jay/HIV quit the Hash years ago, too. Mo ain’t in the grave yet, but the SOB he founded is. Yeah, it was his pride and joy, but once he couldn’t promote it anymore, it withered and died on the vine.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 02/November/2025 @ 1:27 pm

Brian, Good points. Too much frequency and diminished quality are a bad combination. When I first attended, eight bars were competing. In the past few months, there were only four, and half of those might have consisted of two uninterested girls standing there, swaying for a few minutes. I guess 20+ years was long enough for the SOB.

There could still be a market for shows like this. As you say, make them monthly or even quarterly. Add some new bars and fresh faces to the mix. Do more promotion. Sadly, since the founder, Dave Fisher, is ill and seeking to sell his bars, I doubt we’ll see a resurrection.

For some reason, my zombie office worker costume doesn’t fit me now. Go figure.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 02/November/2025 @ 9:46 am

Terry, HaHa! No, I wasn’t naked, but I like the way you think! 🙂 I meant you had to imagine my regular clothes were a costume.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 02/November/2025 @ 9:39 am

Terence, you are welcome.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 02/November/2025 @ 9:38 am

Kevin, yeah, I got to where I was only attending once a month or so anyway. Oh well, we’ll see what happens next. Some other bars in town are doing an occasional “Battle of the Bars” thing, but I haven’t bothered to attend yet.

I’ve had worse days

Kevin, here goes:

When I was a child, learning French was difficult.
He stood seven feet tall, and the audience was astounded by the player’s height.
He was trying hard not to fart, but the class seemed interminable to the sweating Brandon.

A total rephrasing would probably work better, but I wanted to stay within the framework you provided.

Kevin, I’m sorry, but I don’t see the error. I think it would be clearer if I wrote, “but as an introvert, making friends can be difficult.”

Well, no killings at the SOB last night, but all the dancers were wearing scary costumes. Of course, scary and sexy are two different realms, so it wasn’t as fun to watch.

Brian, the only issue I have with Loraine was her lack of honesty. She denied her involvement with someone else right up until the end. The blame is on me for not realizing that I loved her until I had lost her. So, “my brand new plan” was flawed because I’m a sucker for love.

Of course, my perspectives are different at 70 than they were at 60. The clock is winding down, and I’m going to make the most of the time I have left. So, remembering the past and learning from it is fine, but I’m not going to let what happened before negatively impact what is now.

Each new day is a gift to be enjoyed.

A Brand New Plan

Dan, nope —just cereal and milk with an apple and an orange on the side.

Aloysius, Stickman, will be missed for sure. I always appreciated his insights, and his column wasn’t always about the bar scene, though it was obviously the focus. Thanks for the link to Bangkok Seven, I’ll check him out.

Kevin, I’ll link to what happened in my post today. I got fucked, or I fucked myself, but either way, it was a blessing in disguise. I didn’t waste any more of my life on her.

First and last

Koko, nope, Gary is a married man. Sorry to disappoint you.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 31/October/2025 @ 9:30 am

Bluesy Tuesday

Aloysius, naw, we didn’t part on bad terms. He told me to call him if I get a new girlfriend.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 30/October/2025 @ 4:11 pm

Dan, yes, Swan has already arranged for a friend to drive to the grocery store next week. My plan B is to make arrangements with a taxi. They actually charge less than what I was paying Danny.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 30/October/2025 @ 9:12 am

Kevin, I *think* the error is joining two independent clauses inappropriately. I could have put a period after ass kicker, or added an “and” after the comma.

Hmm, I’m overdue for my moment of Zen?

No, I don’t consider Danny a grifter. I tend to overpay my help here, but that’s on me. Lately, Danny has been asking for amounts that make even me cringe, so saying “no, thanks” wasn’t a problem. I suspect he’ll miss the 1200 easy pesos he made driving me to Olongapo for grocery shopping every week.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 30/October/2025 @ 9:10 am

Brian, I’m used to Danny’s driving. If I encountered him on the highway while driving, some of his tactics might provoke road rage, but he seems skilled. He’s driving the same car he was when we met over seven years ago, and it has no dents, so there’s that. There have been occasions when I wondered, Is this the day? Like passing on blind corners on a mountain road. That said, he was reliable, always arrived on time, and even sent a replacement if he was unavailable. He’ll be missed, but he can be replaced. I appreciate Swan intervening to prevent price-gouging.

I have no reason not to believe any of the “truths” presented, although swallowing spiders when sleeping seems unlikely to me. Maybe I think that to help me sleep. I saw in the comments that someone else uses peanut butter as mouse bait. Sounds like a trend!

Not the best

Kevin, no joke, just a typo I didn’t catch.
