Oh, I’m sure we’ll be back soon enough. I’m just happy to be in good enough shape to endure it, if only barely.
As I’m sure you know, there’s a temple up there on the mountain and for a good part of our walk we were serenaded with a lyrical chant.

Yes, but of course my good intentions have not helped me much with language acquisition thus far. For me, splitting time makes me appreciate both countries more. Or it caters to my diminished attention span. One of those.
You may actually be closer to achieving 2/3 of your dream than you think. Once you get those finances stabilized you can spend those long ass breaks from school in the USA or anywhere else you please. Hell, I know a house that is vacant half the time in South Carolina….

No worries, Kevin. The problem was we couldn’t leave the country until the green card was issued. More precisely, if Jee Yeun left without the green card she wouldn’t be able to return and her application for permanent residency would be considered abandoned. So, we’ve been essentially held hostage here.
Jee Yeun does not want to become a U.S. citizen. Based on everything I’ve read, our spending several months of the year out of the country will not impact her permanent residency status. Our plan has always been to live in Korea 6 months a year and the other 6 here. Been stuck here for over a year now which been hard on the both of us, but especially Jee Yeun. Silly girl misses her family and having people to you know, actually talk to in Korean.

Two things I haven’t done this year
Kevin, I appreciate the encouragement. Yeah, being disciplined and focused on a goal does seem to carry over in overcoming multiple bad habits!
I hope you know I’m just poking fun regarding the jacket thing, I thought it was hilarious. Having spent way too much time in the ‘twon (although I’m anxiously awaiting the opportunity to spend more time there) I can attest to seeing many examples of waeguks behaving badly. I’ve always worked hard at avoiding being “that guy”. Oddly enough, I’ve noticed these past couple of years that I’m often the oldest guy in the bar. I have mixed feelings about that I suppose, but there is nothing to be done but to embrace my inner halaboji and play the role of the wizened senior citizen.

Yeah, the news accounts seem to indicate he never fully recovered from his ordeal at the hands of the Chinese. And 31 is definitely not enough to make up for his lost time as a prisoner. As I grow older I’m increasingly aware that whatever time we are allotted here on earth never seems to be quite enough.

Haha, yeah I totally understand that. Jee Yeun also drops a verb now and then, but after being with her so long I kind of automatically fill in the blanks. What’s funny is some people have a hard time understanding her accented English when they first meet, so I play the role of translating English to English.

Kevin, one cold morning at Christmastime a housewife met me at the door in a negligee and invited me in for a hot chocolate. One thing led to another and we ended up in the bedroom. When the lovemaking was done, she handed me a dollar. I asked “what’s this for?” She said I asked my husband what to give the mailman for Christmas and he told me “fuck the mailman. Give him a dollar.”
Ahem, of course that’s just an old letter carrier joke. But I did have some adventures almost as exciting.
