Fair points, and although I’m normally a “happy drunk” I’m sure the beer made me less forgiving than I would normally be in that situation. Re-reading the post just now I think ascribing the incident to racism is a bit over the top. Unlike my friends on the left, I don’t believe race is always the motivating factor when people have disagreements. Obviously, the right thing to have done was simply to apologize and carry on with my night.
Sadly, the park is a bit too far for water balloons which is an otherwise excellent idea. Perhaps a BB gun? Although I can just imagine the international incident that would ensue when the papers reported on the miguk sniper in Gireum-dong!
The good news is my keyboard seems to have dried out on it’s own and all keys are working again as the manufacturer intended. So there’s that.

Good points, Kevin. I always strive to be friendly and polite plus I usually tip very generously in the hopes that that will provide incentive to pick up foreigners in the future. I think your ability to speak the language is a huge plus of course.
The other issue is where I’m catching the cab. I do always make sure I’m on the right side of the street so U-turns are unnecessary. But it is Itaewon late night and that means people are drunk. I’m quite certain that cab drivers have had some bad experiences with those types.
Anyway, it’s a fair point to remember that most of the drivers are working hard to make a living. If on occasion a driver puts self-interest over that of the customer I guess it’s to be expected.

Yes, those were my issues as well. I don’t have any problem with legal “newcomers” but this border invasion currently taking place is insane. Not much room for any nuance in the format provided. And yes, like most surveys of this nature the writer’s political POV was pretty clear.

Alright Kevin, I know you take a dim view of expats who rely on their spouses to navigate the intricacies of Korean culture. I didn’t do that. She’s taking a nap anyway. Thank God for Google! You might be pleased to learn that the second and third results of said Googling expedition were from your old “Kevin’s Walk” blog. One of those had a link to a nice telling of the sae ong ji ma tale.
It was a good read and made me think of the Christian “this too shall pass” entreaty. And now every time I’m maneuvering on those dicey stairs at Dolce Vita I’ll be considering the possible blessing of two broken legs. Thanks for that!

Yeah, that all makes sense. That sentence wouldn’t have survived if I was writing for anything other than LTG. And blogging is definitely compatible with the journal style you mention. The last version you shared is definitely the most consistent with what I was trying to convey.

Now I am pretty certain that the above is improperly punctuated. I tried it with a comma and I tried without. Neither felt right. So, when in doubt I always take the middle ground and use a semi-colon. I should have just re-wrote the sentence in a less convoluted fashion but where’s the fun it that?

I wasn’t worried that we’d lack for things to talk about. Hell, bad grammar is always there as a last resort! Re: waterboarding. I understand that is just a program to baptize terrorists. Which I suppose I’d prefer to a baptism by fire a la Joan of Arc.
