Thanks, Kev. Yes, I’ve been reborn here in the Philippines. Sometimes I wonder if I could go back to my old life if I would be missing this one. “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” and all that.
Dan, fair points but to be clear, my friends who have passed on all died in the USA. I do make it a point though to have an annual checkup here.

Well, I did lead the group in a rousing round of “Fuck off you, cunts” when the Hares were on the ice.
But, while I blame them for the deepwater river crossing, the Navy base was not fenced nor posted with warning signs to stay out. When you look at the pictures you can see there was nothing to indicate we were on a military installation. I blame the Navy for our troubles.

As to Graham, this is latest update I’ve seen and it’s about 3 weeks old now.
“Graham is now being allowed to start to eat foods by mouth, obviously this is blended up for him to be able to handle but shows advancement. He is also now showing signs of being able to recognize some people and show emotion in his face with smiles and raised eyebrows which is wonderful to see. He has also been able to be moved by wheelchair to the physiotherapy room where he can exercise his good muscles and was able to stand (assisted of course) for a few minutes. We still wish to repatriate Graham with his family back in Scotland but this may take a little more time than expected due to flight rules and regulations. Next week we are starting the process of finding Graham a private house so he can continue his rehabilitation with private nurses and carers until he is able to fly home. Once again thank you to everyone who continues to donate to contribute towards Grahams rehabilitation.”

Kev, yeah it was a bargain price for sure. Especially for a hotel resto as opposed to a Waffle House type place.
Dan, granted it can be read both ways, although the menu does say “eggs” which implies more than one. I guess my expectation wasn’t for a buffet or all you can eat, just the standard order of those items–2 eggs, 3 strips of bacon, etc. The photo on the menu seems to suggest that. No big deal though, I got what I wanted and left with a full stomach.
Soju, yeah I toyed with the idea of ordering 5 waffles. That certainly would have been more than an äll you can eat deal for me!

Actually, I didn’t know anything about Hoyt I hadn’t seen on Instapundit. I can actually cut her some slack since English isn’t her first language. Still, “commander” for commandeer? Was that a typo, a misspelling, or not knowing they are two different words?
As I said, I’m in no position to criticize given my sloppy writing. It was just surprising to see so many mistakes in one small piece of work. As you said, thank God for editors. BTW, when I hit the lottery I’ll be hiring you to proof my blog entries prior to posting. You’re welcome!

Yeah, the Yank had some ideas. The main thing I wanted was coverage of all the doors downstairs and I achieved that. The feature I like most though is I can watch the cams live on my phone. Last night at darts I checked in and saw my helper cleaning up the mess I left on the table. 🙂
Obviously, the cameras won’t prevent a break-in but might help deter one or at least provide some evidence to help apprehend the culprit.

To be honest, I was being honest about the machete. It’s not mine. One of my helpers borrowed it from the downstairs guy to cut the grass in my back yard. It was still sitting out there yesterday, and given my recent bad experience, I decided to repurpose it (that sounds better than stealing it, right?). Anyway, I hope I never have to use it in self-defense, but better to have it available than not for sure.

Yeah, wish I could get a gun here legally. I’ve made it a lot harder to break in now and I am going to look into CCTV as an additional deterrent. I’ve I could only get the Mexicans to pay for a wall around my house I’d have it made!

Dan, my “Steve, the Englishman who doesn’t drink” schtick is definitely done tongue in cheek. He’s an outstanding darter and I joke about being further disadvantaged in the finals when he’s sober and I’m not. All in fun!
I have gotten to know Steve better these past few months and he’s a nice guy with an interesting story. He lived and worked in Spain for the past 22 years where he owns a bar! When I pointed out the incongruity of a non-drinker owning a bar, he laughed and said “oh, I use to drink–a lot! That’s why I had to quit.” I certainly respect him for that and admire his ability to take control of his life. On our hike together the other day he said he doesn’t miss drinking at all. Good for him!

I think that is an acceptable mistake from a non-native English speaker. She knew the word she wanted and the way it sounded. I cringe when I think how my limited Korean must have sounded to the natives.
I’m pretty sure I previously related the story of being called out by my secretary for the way I pronounced “ascertain” when I dictated a letter for her to type (yeah, I’m THAT old).

Kev, rainy season is over but apparently a wayward typhoon offshore has triggered the recent rains. I make food, but I don’t create it. I’m a mix guy when it comes to cornbread. I actually found some Marie Callender’s cornbread mix at the grocery store and it’s pretty damn good. No shame in a mix that works!
Soju, Maurice’s! My favorite! I do miss that mustard-based bbq sauce. I’m retired now, no way I can afford to pay my Korea bar tab!

Well, of course, we had contingency plans. Basically in the event of a strike by Korean employees, we’d have American soldiers assigned to those duties. Unfortunately, those plans were written when we had 45,000 troops stationed in Korea. Now we have around 28,000. Not enough bodies to do the work…
Or do you mean that I took the easy way out of the Hash yesterday? Ha Ha, yes, that too! It felt right at the time…

Yeah, the quakes were down in Mindanao, a whole other island quite far from here. Nothing at all here on Luzon. Thankfully. Quakes and volcanos, that’s part of life in the Philippines!

Yes, the chicken pie was small and cheap (P210). They had a cottage pie on the menu too at P350, which I’m sure was full size. The chicken pie was chock full of goodness, creamy with chunks of chicken and veggies. The crust was probably the best I’ve had amongst the various pies I’ve tried around town.
Oh, you are big on proper pronunciation too? Who knew? 🙂 You are right though, there’s a time and a place for everything and calling it Paree would sound ridiculous in an English conversation. It’s funny, I’ve experienced angst almost my whole life, but never heard the German pronunciation (and never knew the word’s origin was German). It’s always good to learn something new!

Well, Filipino’s can and do laugh at themselves. When things go wrong they often just shrug and say “only in the Philippines”. But “face” is a big thing here too. Were I to be critical in any personal way it wouldn’t go over well at all. I mostly keep my opinions to myself…
