A fool’s game

Things took an interesting turn in the wee hours of the morning. Woke up around 3:30 am and couldn’t get back to sleep. I’m normally up around 4:30 anyway, so I dragged my sorry ass downstairs. Did my nebulizer to clear out the lungs some, then checked my temperature. The thermometer beeped like I hadn’t heard before, and when I checked why it was because I was running a fever–38.5! That’s the highest its ever been since I started doing daily readings over a year ago.

Back to bed and slept until 6:00. Now I need to work on my self-quarantine strategy. Already canceled today’s group hike of course. I’m trying to decide whether to make the living room my quarantine jail, or just take it upstairs to my bedroom. No TV in my room, no bed in the living room. Or maybe I’ll do both. Also want to make sure I don’t expose my helpers anymore than I already have. They both seem fine so far though.

Spreading Joy*

Yes, it is definitely a day-by-day thing with Joy. I’m always on the lookout for red flags and I don’t hesitate to rein her in when she talks or acts in a manner beyond the scope of our arrangement. That’s going to be the real test I think–I plan to see her once or twice a month, she’s going to probably pressure me for more. The good thing though is I can and will walk away completely if her behavior warrants.

I like being compared to a porn star! I do get the analogy and in a way, it’s what I’ve been striving for–intimacy without emotional engagement. That’s probably just a pipe dream, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. It does occur to me that I’m one fucked up individual. I’ll need to look more into my motivations in a future post.

As always, I appreciate your insights. I’m definitely going to proceed with caution, but I do feel completely in control at this point. Famous last words?

When is a trail not a trail?

Thanks for the comment, Benny. No, I’m quite certain that whatever ails me is not COVID–the symptoms just don’t align. I don’t trust the doctors here enough to give me an accurate diagnosis, so I’m pretty much on my own in that regard. Anyway, the biggest issues are a lack of stamina and the cough. My damaged lungs have more phlegm and mucus than usual. This too shall pass.

Hope the comments issue is resolved soon.

Well, Smokes and Bottles isn’t chintzy for this area; in fact, it’s practically classy! A nice change of pace though for sure.

Yesterday my driver sent a replacement to pick me up for the weekly grocery shopping run. I assumed he had a conflicting gig. Nope, turns out he is sick now too. It seems we did bring SOMETHING back from Angeles City…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 31/March/2021 @ 6:46 am

From Kevin Kim:

Smokes and Bottles has an almost American-style chintziness about it, like those corny, tiki-themed, faux-Polynesian-style bars you can find in DC and other major cities. But everyone looked happy, so there’s that.

Easiest way to self-check for infection is to wait until the two-week mark after your encounter with the infected person. If, at that point, you’re showing symptoms, then there’s a problem (duh). If there are no symptoms, then it’s likely (but not absolutely certain) that there’s no problem. Wait another week to be sure.

What are you gonna do?

Thanks, Soju. Loyal readers like you make it all worthwhile. I hope you keep coming back for more!

It is kinda funny, when I took that house picture I didn’t even notice the dog. If I move there maybe she’ll adopt me like Buday did here.

Yeah, dickhead works every bit as well.

Peace out!

I honestly don’t remember where I saw that basketball photo first, but glad I found the “right” one. It got the attention of one of my liberal friends who tried and failed to defend the science of psychology–they are merely setting a good example. I called it bullshit and said being a sheep isn’t science. Ah well.

Yes, I did send her the third pic. She said it was like the seasons of life, and I was back to being sexy again. I told her she should see me naked. I don’t think she found that funny…

Sleeping around

Well, they do have storage tanks for the urine which they allegedly haul to shore periodically to empty in an appropriate way. There is no pooping allowed, the signage says to take your bowel movement to a comfort room (CR) on land.

I tend to believe that they aren’t dumping waste into the bay, the repercussions of getting caught doing so would be too great.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate your support.

Jerry, I haven’t (and won’t) go to a doctor because I don’t trust them. We had a guy die from a heart attack a few months ago, and they called it COVID. I don’t want to get misdiagnosed and quarantined over some unrelated illness. No fever, a wet cough, some body aches, and lethargy. I will survive!

I hear you, Jerry. No way I could live in the USA now. I’d be miserable.

Sapped

thanks, guys. This too shall pass…

They say it’s your birthday

Yeah, I’m holding out hope that she’ll come to her senses and decide not to try a gouge me. I do love my neighborhood!

If the move proves necessary, right now my plan is to rent the Hashmobile and a couple of helpers to haul my stuff. This house came furnished, so I don’t have a whole lot to move. It shouldn’t be a problem.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 27/March/2021 @ 6:49 am

Ten for us? Roger that.

Brian, yeah, I’ve heard that saying many times here. If I understood correctly, their rent is only $300. a month. With low-overhead and a good business plan, I’d have to think breaking even is an achievable goal. They have an outside/streetside bar area which is where I’ll be hanging out when I visit.

Kev, I never did the Four Rivers, but yeah, sometimes it’s nice to change it up and do a pleasant and comparatively easy hike that doesn’t involve climbing hills and then slipping and sliding back down them!

Nothing at all

I warned you, Soju! And the Constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishment. Still, I could be enticed to visit Cuba if my country needs me…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 28/March/2021 @ 6:42 am

Brian, I can’t possibly sound that bad. It must have been some malfunction with the recording equipment.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 25/March/2021 @ 7:26 am

Kev, re: the “sharing and caring” thing. It seems simple in my head–caring in a way that friends care for one another. Maybe it is all make-believe and there is no way to subordinate the overt transactional aspects of the arrangement but in my imagination, it’s just a “thanks for help baby, can I come over to snuggle and cuddle for a while?” type thing. The classic friends with benefits scenario. Maybe it is just a dream.

That trail was for sure the most difficult to keep your feet I can remember. As I announced at the time, “what a coincidence! This is the first AND last time I’ve hiked this trail.”

So, you are saying my singing could make a hound howl?

Are you hungry, man?

Well, if I were to become a Rolling Stone, they’d call me Mitch Stagger…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 24/March/2021 @ 7:21 am

R.I.P.

QP, yes, finding out that way would have been hard on me…

» Posted By John McCrarey On 23/March/2021 @ 9:54 am

First time I’ve used or heard “pussy bigot”, but I’d be surprised if it is an original thought. What else are you gonna call a man who selfishly insists on a vagina as a sperm repository?

Eat my balls!

“So the plot twist is that the person in the mosaicked Domino’s ad is actually a guy. (Ladyboys for the win!)”

Damn, I thought she looked familiar!

Yeah, Elley is definitely not on my list for a revisit, with or without her cousin. One of her earliest messages after our first and last encounter was expressing an interest in joining me for a hike. I was entertaining that idea until she followed up with a seemingly endless chain of “sweetie” messages. “I willing to stay with you forever” after one brief sexual encounter–seriously?

Perhaps it is only by comparison to Elley that Joy seems to have some potential, but she’s doing the kind of things I like so far. For one, she’s not pestered me for money or experienced any “emergencies” that only I can rescue her from. And she has shown an interest in me and the things I do–“what are you cooking today?”, “I hope you’ll invite me to hike with you”, offering up some remedies for my cough, and volunteering to nurse me back to health. Yeah, she may just be playing the game, but she does it well. And really, that’s all I’ve expected from any of her predecessors, but they couldn’t even pretend to care. Anyway, I have my eyes wide open and will walk away if she gets needy and clingy, but so far, so good.

As to the larger issue of my “compulsive need for insincere companionship”, I consider that a feature, not a bug. It is a risk-free proposition–if I don’t care, they can’t hurt me. Having someone around occasionally to hang with (and/or bang with) without all that relationship baggage is what I want at this stage of my life. Maybe that is empty and meaningless, but it is only a small part of my life. If I find one who can play that role it will be money well spent! Who knows, maybe I will find a “true friend” along the way. I’m just not going to set myself up for disappointment if I don’t.

Thanks for the links to the ballsy videos. I hate Alec Baldwin but enjoyed his Schweddy balls! I need to sing Chef’s song next time I serve up a helping of my balls.

It makes you wander

Yeah, I won’t put others at risk if I can help it. Still, not sure what this is. Body aches, cough, and temp up 37.3 this morning. I’ll stay home until these symptoms fade.

Taking a tumble

Kev, yeah, I’ve seen the “buddy Christ” image before but didn’t know it came from Dogma, a film I haven’t seen.

Bob, there’s a good chance I’ll be “spreading Joy” in the future! Thanks for the good wishes.

Six, I didn’t see any St. Paddy’s Day promotions taking place in Barretto. I might have missed something, I only visited the dart bar. I hadn’t even noticed the green attire on Wednesday. Most of us had something green on for the Hash on Monday though…

A new hobby?

James, thank you for the kind words and your support. When I die I hope you’ll write my obituary! Hopefully, that won’t be any time soon. You are right, though. The situation is what it is, existed long before I arrived, and will continue after I am gone. I’m just finding my comfort level and making the best of it.

BW, a long way to go to get to #69, but I’m looking forward to it!

» Posted By John McCrarey On 19/March/2021 @ 7:18 am

QP, at current rates, yes. I just use 50 pesos to the dollar for easy conversion.

A man carries bricks on his back to earn a living, sometimes a woman lays on her back to make some money. I don’t see a difference. I’m not pretending to be a saint here, but if I say no to the sex offer, the rent goes unpaid. If I just give them money and get nothing in return, I’m a sucker. I still see this as a helping each other situation.

» Posted By John McCrarey On 18/March/2021 @ 9:50 am

Six, thank you very much for your thoughtful comment. I really do appreciate your insights. I hope you will continue to read and comment here. I don’t really disagree with what you say, transactional sex can be considered prostitution, but I never ask a woman for sex directly–I wait until they offer. I’m not sure that makes much of a difference though. And it is not like I’m seeking these women out, they are finding me somehow.

Kev, I have done that marriage thing with disastrous results. I’m finished with love and all the baggage that comes with it. So yeah, superficial relationships are just fine with me these days. I’m not sure how “deep” I am, but these encounters are just a small part of my life–just something to do now and then. And no, I’m not desperate for sex at all. I like it though, and once a week or so is plenty. And when pretty young women are willing to make it available, who am I to say no?

Over the top

Yes, indeed mountain trails abound in Seoul. And like you say, Brian, it’s weird to suddenly be transported by your legs to a wilderness within the urban sprawl. That’s honestly one of the reasons I loved Seoul so much. Kevin, I remember you were a regular on Namsan back in the day. I also recall that kickass hike we did there just before I moved away for good. Bukansan is another great hiking experience. Still miss those days!

I’d walk a mile for a Camel

BW, I understand. Guys see it differently I suppose.

Well, a lot of the banca boats have a towline tied onshore. Sometimes when walking the beach, I’ll trip over it. So, it’s either a stub my toe line or I’ll tangle my shoe in the rope kind of thing. Boy, that was convoluted even for me. But after that much effort at being punny I can’t bring myself to delete. Sorry!

Things can always be worse

Jerry, I think that is fine from a reader’s perspective. As the writer though, I have a responsibility to try and get it right. I need to be a better proofreader for one thing.

Anyway, I appreciate having a loyal reader/commenter like you on board!

Ai Yi Yi! I meant to say who is #1? Actually, I was rushed and it must have “sounded” right when I hurriedly read it. Alright, I’ll fess up–another sloppy overlook of an obvious error. Scary in a way how my brain says “won” and my fingers hear “one”. Re-reading this post just now I’ve spotted a couple of other obvious errors. Damn it!

Tomorrow I will reveal who displayed the best camel toe at the Corona Hash shindig!

The AC is not working

Thanks. And thanks for letting me get away with “up to day” instead of the intended up-to-date. I wrote it wrong and then read it right when I hurriedly proofed it. Saw it right away when I went to the comments this morning. Damn, I may have to hire an editor!
