Kevin, I’m impressed with your Star Trek celebration suggestions. You truly must be a fanatic! The Hash is already scheduled at It Doesn’t Matter for run #1701, so I won’t be able to put your ideas to the test. Honestly, I’d be surprised if my fellow Hashers even made the connection with the Enterprise. But here’s what I will do: At the Circle, I will announce the significance of our run number matching the starship number and ask folks to raise their beer in recognition of the Star Trek voyagers.

Thanks for the insights, Steve. I’m doing okay for a 70-year-old. I’m fat despite the walking, but I’m working on some dietary changes to hopefully reduce my weight. Stay tuned.

Kevin, the Arizona Resort is for sale. If it changes hands, I’d give the new owners a shot. Otherwise, I have no desire for future disappointment. I expect the floating bar is losing money and may not even finish out the season before being permanently closed. Our new Sunday alternatives will include spending time on the rooftop at Central Park Reef Hotel.

Oddly enough, I just read today that the Philippines has purchased 2.5 million barrels of oil from Russia. What a world.
Yes, I enjoyed watching Junior Bonner all those years ago. I was never into the rodeo scene, but it was a good story. It was filmed in part at an annual rodeo event in Prescott, Arizona, a city I moved to a few years after the movie came out.

Kevin, thanks for sharing your memories of the ’70s. It sounds like you had an amazing time. I was 15-25 years old and had a totally different experience, mostly sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. Two kids by the time the ’80s arrived.
Shit, I always thought those dresses were spelled “mumu.” And what course, pray tell, did you get a “C” in?
Oh, I saw “Deliverance” and never forgot it. Those dueling banjos and the ass rape are burned into my memory. Quite the story.
I agree, the ’70s were the classic decade, and it’s been pretty much downhill from there ever since. Although that internet thing they came up with is pretty cool. Honestly, it is hard to imagine a life without it. And smartphones.

Brian, that’s pretty much the case as I’ve witnessed it. The Aeta villages are not usually so far from town as to be inaccessible, but they are definitely enclaves separated from the Filipino communities that surround them. I have never witnessed any overt racism directed towards Aeta people. In fact, they are often the recipients of charity projects to bring food and comfort to the village. That said, I’ve noticed that Aetas are not integrated into the rest of the population at all. I have never seen an Aeta person working in the community as a store clerk, construction worker, or in any other job serving the Filipino community. My sense is that this is by choice, not because of discrimination. The Aetas are close-knit and prefer to live among themselves.
Yes, with transport costs up, everything transported will cost more, too. I can bitch about it, but I can also afford to pay more. The poor folks here are going to suffer all the more until this is fixed. I expect it will be worse before it gets better.
Regarding the war effort, all I know is what I’ve read. The clock is ticking, boots are on the way, and Iran will either accept Trump’s peace terms or see the remainder of their infrastructure go up in flames. I think we’ll see something happen in that regard in a matter of days, not weeks. Ultimately, Hormuz will be reopened, and places like the PI will have their fuel supply restored.

Thanks for your concern, Gazza. A San Miguel Light has 100 calories per bottle. Ozempic seems to have curbed my appetite for sweets and snacks, so even with the beers I consume, I’m taking in a lot fewer calories these days. I’m only doing a weekly weigh-in, so I won’t know until Tuesday if I’m moving in the right direction.

In my head, when I write these, I see two independent clauses: “and WE hired.” Why I neglect actually adding that necessary word repeatedly is another sad commentary on my competence.
You’d think after 500 years of Spanish rule, tortillas would be a thing here. I’ll keep looking.

Kevin, I remember your lesson about what a person wonders doesn’t end with a question mark. I’m not sure who’s paying, which is why I asked. I guess the fix is to drop the “I wonder” and rewrite as, “I want to know who in the fuck is paying for those ‘no’ votes?”

Thanks for the AI advice on avoiding a carabao. I usually give them a wide berth, but I didn’t see this one under a tree until he was coming at me. Lucky for me, he got to the end of his rope before he reached me.
Re: self-delusion: I guess it depends on how you define rarely. I drink almost every day of the year, so let’s say 360 days. I get floored maybe every other month, or six times a year. Six out of 360 sounds rare to me.
I get tremors just thinking about going without beer for a week.

Well, I never gave up alcohol the first time I lost all that weight. Ozempic is a tool to help me achieve my goal more quickly as I strive for my diet discipline. We’ll see soon enough how that works out for me.

Brian, yeah, I tried to use the multi-verse concept to fix the holes in my fantasy, but Kevin pointed out that would be just like living in The Matrix: not real. Thanks for the tips on shows I might like. They do sound interesting, and if I can ever drag my ass in front of the TV, I’ll look for them.
Well, I am only going to use the GLP-1 as a tool to reach my weight-loss goals. Then it will be on me to maintain that weight. We’ll see how that works out for me.
“The Dance” is one of my Garth Brooks favorites, but it didn’t come into my head yesterday. I guess our lives truly are better left to chance.

Aaron, nope, I don’t handle the hard stuff well. With beer, I can, for the most part, moderate my inebriation level and stop before I get drunk-drunk. With vodka, gin, or whiskey, it sneaks up on me, and I’m wasted before I know it.
I think I can lose the belly while keeping beer a part of life. I do need to say goodbye to ice cream and sweets, though.

Brian, my “infraction” was saying I liked the Hare’s trail. At the beginning of the circle, the Hare has to sit on the ice, and anyone who claims to have thought it was a good trail has to join him there. So, I guess you could say I put myself on the ice.

We hit a wall, but made it through.
The error is that I didn’t need that comma as written. I intended to write, “but we made it through,” which needed the comma. It’s pretty hilarious that I’ve gone from not using commas enough to using them too often.I’m definitely feeling a decline in my ability to do inclines. Hopefully, if I lose some of this excess weight, I’ll do better on the hills.
I didn’t know that backpacker was famous when I watched the video. Glad he is still going at it!

So it felt like those expressionless, unblinking eyes were staring at me. It is sad to imagine what her life must be like, but I guess it shows that there is value in every life.

Brian, well, women being attracted to “rich” men is a worldwide phenomenon for sure. I agree that most relationships have a “what’s in it for me” aspect, at least in the beginning. That’s what attraction is all about. So, in that sense, it’s all transactional. I think one of the fundamental differences between many Western women and Filipinas is attitude. My observation is that Filipinas are more giving in nature (yeah, they’ll take your money for sure, but that’s different) and sincerely want to fulfill their man’s needs and desires. It’s sort of the old-fashioned way relationships used to be done: the man provides, the woman takes care of. Of course, being young and hot satisfies a man’s fantasies too. 🙂
Yep, I don’t understand the bar-owner mentality. There are way more bars here than customers to support them, and yet, whenever one closes, another opens. I could see it if you were fulfilling a void, such as our lack of a legitimate beach bar, but nope, it’s always more of the same. I think in some cases bar ownership is more of a hobby than a way of making money.

Kevin, yeah, I do seem to be useless when it comes to grammar. Well, I guess I can always serve as a bad example. I understand the rules when I read them (thanks again for the reminder links), but I seem to be incapable of retaining those lessons and recognizing my fuck-ups. As my mental faculties continue to decline, I’m not sure long-term improvement is in the cards, but I’ll keep on trying regardless.
