Backstage with Dorothy

Acceptable in the context of a loving relationship.

You are assuming too much. Are you gay? Be honest.

Wow Jeff you are confused. John is mine. Has been for ages. We have 5 kids. Your gaydar is not working. I’m the Christian liberal. John is the deist neoconservative. The kids (all grown) are all over the place both politically and spiritually.

As John is well aware the Wizard of Oz is one of my all time favorites. I own the movie, forced the family to listen to Dark Side of the Moon while watching with the sound off, collect the figures, etc. I love the story, I love the music, I love Judy Garland. Note: I see nothing political in the movie. It is a fine example of pure escapism entertainment. You are entitled to make of the movie what you wish of course. Whatever floats your boat.

I am perplexed as to why you feel compelled to come to what is essentially a family site-our family and the occassional friend, and behave so rudely. We love a robust debate but we have little time for the ignorant, conspiracy nuts or bad behavior. Like you I do not think Ranger Bill or whatever his handle was portrayed an accurate depiction of Iraq but you were quite frankly so ugly in your response that I had no intention of lending any credence to your stance. So be forwarned. Either you come ready to debate with logic, common sense, decency and facts or expect to be ignored.

Song for Adam

You have sent me links to several Korean blogs but I don’t recall if his was one of them. I am glad I cannot make a mental connection to him. All death is sad but a suicide is just so much worse. Lord I feel for his mother.

So, would it look and sound like that if they had you staring in this commercial? Now that would be funny.

Greetings Earthlings!

The food looks awful. No wonder there is not an obesity epidemic in Korea.

News from the front

No Carol is an American housewife/civilian government employee, whose closest contact with the military comes from being an Army brat, once married to an Air Force Vietnam Vet, once to a sailor, sister to an Air Force CMSgt and the mother of an Army reservist. So no military credentials what- soever just a lot of chatter and vested interest.

Carol is reading the paper, blogs and Ranger Bill. she is not in Iraq, near Iraq and has no special inside information. I know horse shit when I see it though.

» Posted By Carol On 18/April/2006 @ 8:26 pm

No disrespect to Ranger Bill but we’ve never had control. Violence in Iraq is not unusual but the norm and that is due to a lack of control. It is reassuring to know that having opened Iraq up to al Queda that we are at least being sucessful in our fight against them. Sectarian violence is much more problematic though and that is what might lead to civil war-not saying that this is a foregone conclusion-not al Queda.

It is a bit naive for Ranger Bill to believe he has a clearer picture of what is happening in Iraq that the media. The media is looking at the big picture not snapshots of isolated success. We can be losing and yet win every battle in which we engage, something some folks just don’t seem able to grasp. One thing is for sure, what we have been doing is not working and I don’t know how we will manage to come up with a plan for success when so many people in command positions refuse to acknowldege any mistakes have been made or that any difficulties have been encountered.

I guess they paint a rosy picture in the mistaken belief that it is necessary to maintain troop morale. I say mistaken because it insults their intelligence, leads to a distrust in command and fails to fully prepare them for what lies ahead. So far the whole situation has played out exactly like those against the war warned that it would but rather acknowledging what time is telling you misguided neocons just keep counting on more time.

Another reason to not drive in Korea

I am not sure I would call them tasteful either. Erotica yes but not art except for the one bending over.

» Posted By Carol On 27/February/2006 @ 10:43 am

Soft porn is tasteful nudes dear. Hard porn is the other type of nudes. The link made no sense. I thought you were linking to a story about street hazards or the lack of child care. I didn’t see anything like that unless the naked females on that website are suppose to represent more lack of child care. Though to be fair they looked pretty grown up. So why the link?

» Posted By Carol On 27/February/2006 @ 10:41 am

You linked to a soft porn site? Have you lost your mind or been too long gone?

Oh baby, I don’t disagree with you on everything. Although, I guess it is a good thing you are so hunky as it helps me to overlook some of your other shortcomings.

Tolerating intolerance

Not done yet. Just had to take a break to be ill and no your post didn’t make me ill. I am just sick and consequently cranky, which probably explains why I find this whole thing so irritating. Just what in heck did these ignorant newspapers think was going to happen when they published these cartoons? Let’s see the cartoons protray Islam and Mohammad as vehicles of terrorism i.e., all Muslims are actually terrorists either full blown, in training, in the closet just waiting to reveal their true natures, what have you. So then muslims react in just the manner as portrayed. What did they think was going to happen???? What was the point? They could have published editorials to make their point. They published the cartoons to get a reaction and by golly they are getting it in spades. Reap what you sow! What have they accomplished? Absolutely nothing! Did they do it so they could point the finger and say “See! I told you so!” How childish is that? How stupid is that? The French spearheaded the whole thing that should tell you something.

Let’s say you walk into your office one day to discover that a coworker, who entertains the notion that he is a lady’s man, has scanned a picture of your daughter that he got off your desk and using the computer morphs her head onto a poster girl from Hustler wearing nothing but pearls legs spread wide. You are upset with this picture even though you know it is not a actual picture of your daughter because you feel it dishonors her and you. Your coworker removes the picture but tensions are high between you and talking to him about the situation just didn’t work. He thinks you are a prig and simply cannot see why you didn’t get the joke and at last resorts to making the freedom of speech argument. You don’t see that as a form of freedom of speech. A month goes by things don’t improve and then some of your other coworker’s side with coworker one because they think you are making too big a deal out of it. So they all morph your daughter’s head onto a variety of ponorgraphic pictures. They do this because you were so insistent that the first picture was an inaccurate protrayal of your daughter and what she is about that you refused to listen to their arguments that it was free speech at work and buddy you shouldn’t be so sensitive and you shouldn’t try to make them live by your values. Lie to yourself if you want to but I know you and I know you would cold cock someone if not two or three. You would yell in the scarey voice and turn all red and rip up the pictures and pop the first person who tried to stop you or got too mouthy. Of course you will not see any parallels because you don’t want to. You will foolishly come back and say that would be a type of sexual harassment and I’d sue the company if they didn’t take action. Yep it is not permitted in the workplace even though it might well be a community of perverts where it passed the standards of decency test. It is not permitted in the workplace because we undertand that sometimes there is a clash, a conflict of interest, between freedom of speech and decency, particularly if the depiction has the effect of causing harm such as a hostile work environment. You know we don’t usually need special rules and laws until some people become so pigheaded, so insensitive, so bigoted in their self-righteousness that they forget to use plain damn common sense.

Where I stand

Pat Robertson just might call for death to the perpetrator. That is his style these days!

Interesting use of the term “moral equivalence.” There is nothing moral about disrespecting anyone’s religion. There is nothing moral about deliberating inflaming another’s passions and anger. There is nothing moral in hatemongering.

You want to see moral equivalence? Go look in the mirror. You are confusing morality with politics. Yes freedom of speech is important and no there should not be laws that prevent us from expressing unpopular opinions. However, that doesn’t mean, that because we are free to express anything we like, regardless of how crude or insensitive, that we should. Moral means to conform to a standard of right behavior, to act righteously, virtuously and with nobility. To be morally equivalent means to make an excuse for acting in a way that is not right. You are being morally equivalent when you make the argument that we should not condemn the cartoons simply because freedom of expression means we can express anything. Wrong. You can express anything but being moral means that when you see something expressed that is wrong then you condemn it. You call it what it is-crude, thoughtless, insensitive. To do anything else is moral equivalency.

I think it is sort of akin to the feelings that some Americans have about burning the American flag, only more intense of course because the prophet is a religious symbol. My point is you cannot simply characterize this as an issue of freedom of speech. It is freedom of speech versus respect.

Stupid is as stupid does

I think you should get the MRI. It may not be a seizure situation so much as a lack of ozygen to the brain thing. You were probably hyperventilating a bit when you gave blood. I know that doesn’t sit well with your big guy image but you know a big guys heart has to work harder. You said you were coughing which can also constrict oxygen intake. This shouldn’t cause you to black out unless of course you have something else wrong with you! Get your carotid arteries checked for a blockage at the very least. I would be seriously upset if you didn’t come home in the same condition as you left-i.e., alive. Now do it!

A warning for men!

Excuse me? Are you saying that if Korean women were more interested in sex that you would succumb? Now what was that you were saying about judgement?

» Posted By Carol On 19/January/2006 @ 11:47 am

I had hoped to see you protest that you are not a “victim” rather that you were not always blessed with the best of judgement, prior to me of course. However, ….

And when I die….

You know considering a previous mishap you had in the car with a lit cigarette, I can believe he guessed accurately. I am going to be killed by a crazed man with a garden hoe in a hardware store. That sucks.

The price of freedom

There was a pretty good op-ed piece in the Washington Post today that made a compelling argument that we are using the wrong language in discussing the war in Iraq. The writer opined that we should not be talking in terms of winning or losing and then went on to use the success of Korea as an example. It was a good editorial. Very persuasive. I jsut wish I could remember who wrote it.

Looking out my back door

It looks beautiful. And cold, really cold. You got a bit more snow in your first snow fall than we did but we got ours earlier-Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It was all gone by Thanksgiving day.

Bukowski

Ah but Bukowski is uplifting. He doesn’t merely endure his existence, he thrives. By the way the very fact that he even endures the existence he describes in his poetry instead of letting it depress him to the point of a) suicide or b) a loss of faith speaks volumes in my mind. This guy finds the notable in everyday life-beer, women, sex. He clearly has known his share of disappointments but he remains engaged in life. That is uplifting.
