Where I live (politically that is)

This quiz showing where you would be most at home politically was kinda fun. And I think it pretty accurately captured my “hometown”.

Here’s what it says about me and where I live:

NW-You would feel most at home in the Northwest region. You advocate a large degree of economic and personal freedom. Your neighbors include folks like Ayn Rand, Jesse Ventura, Milton Friedman, and Drew Carey, and may refer to themselves as “classical liberals,” “libertarians,” “market liberals,” “old whigs,” “objectivists,” “propertarians,” “agorists,” or “anarcho-capitalist.”

So take the quiz and let’s see if you are living nearby…..

  1. Except now looking at the map I was right next to Drew Carey. Looks like I’m a bit north west of you.

  2. John I had you all wrong. I misinterpreted some of your posts, it must be the distance between us and the difference in expat air between you there and me here in europe. I thought you were closer to Rush Limbaugh when actually you are closer to John Kerry. My deepest apologies.

  3. Euro, I’m probably closer to the middle on most issues, but I trend towards personal freedom and less government intrusion on our lives. I appear more conservative because I strongly support the President’s foriegn policy. And once you come out in support of the war you get pigeon-holded as a right-winger. I have tried to make the point that I have remained true to my liberal beliefs, it is the left who has abandoned those principles.

Anyway, it’s all a matter of degrees. We would probably agree an many issues if we sat down and had a glass of wine and some rational discourse. Give me a call next time you are in the ROK!

  4. John that was a first an immediate reply. I have nothing against you supporting the President’s foreign policy which you did not correctly spell by the way. As a government contractor let me remind you there are several ways to fight wars. One is to win the battles and lose the war, or to win the war and lose the ensuing battles, either way its a matter of opinion which way is the best depending on the contracts involved. The cost of 300 billion dollars to destroy Iraq and the 500 billion needed to rebuild it will I think be a good test of your beliefs in Republican Bush Democracy. I do not think it will happen. So far the President is 800 billion in the hole, since only 18 billion has been actually been spent for Iraqi improvements all security issues. Maybe contracting in Iraq would be more profitable since it does not cut out the middle man. Next time you are in Europe give me a call. The real wine is in Europe as well as the real beer, and I dare say it has always taken 20-1 odds to drink a German under the table.

  5. Okay, Euroyank where did you fall? No fair not telling. I am really curious since your opinion on the Iraq situation closely mirrors my own.

  6. Yeah, I hate that I have lost the ability to spell, and the only spell check capability I have is to copy my posts to word, and I was just too lazy to do that this morning. I actually had foreign spelled right then changed it. I hate exceptions to the “i before e except after c” rule!

As to the cost of the war, I find it difficult to quantify the value of freedom and ending oppression and human suffering. Altruism aside, I honestly believe that with the changes in Afghanistan and Iraq (and hopefully soon in Iran, Syria and maybe Saudi Arabia) America’s national security is greatly enhanced. And there is never too high a price to pay for that my friend.

I will grant you that Europe produces some fine wines. I don’t buy products of France, but the Italians do a nice job with Merlot. Beer is good period. I am growing quite fond of the Korean brews (although none are dark), and back home I preferred beer from Holland.

And I’m with Carol, let’s see where your political neighborhood is located. You always play it close to the vest, Euro. So, as they say in poker “I call”.

  7. John take a walk around some areas of Los Angelos or Chicago or Detroit or any other large American city or visit some the prison system – those are war zones. And if you think the USA is spending upwards of 400 billion a year, and having its national debt funded and owned by Asians and Europeans in order to spread Democracy and free people, all I have to say is a four letter word. The politicians are bought and sold by corporations, and the national interest is directed by corporate interests. Just look at how American Vets are treated when their sacrifices are no longer in demand. Its all BS and its all Corporate politcs. The same corporations that sold out the economy profit at both ends and buy and sell politicians wholesale. Its all part of the meal. CALL

  8. Geez Euro, if I were that cynical I don’t think I’d bother getting out of bed in the morning. I grew up in LA and know about gangs and poverty. I am also fully aware that the USA has many other problems, but I see them as the residual impacts of living in free society. People get to make choices, including bad ones. But I’ll take America warts and all over any other society.

I still owe you a post on Europe and I’ll get to it soon. But I’ll take our economy and the deficits over the death spiral I see taking place amongst the faded powers of Europe.

Imagine a deep baritone voice here:

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

  9. and you have no clue of Europe but I know enough about the USA, and I will take the little warts of Europe over your little warts in the USA any day.

  10. as an expat in Europe I have a lot more choices and a greatly improved life and I dont have to sing or play the chorus or stand in line for a freedom handout. 🙂

  11. john just because you have a socialist american government contract and tons of little countries to kick around and you have china and japan and europe holding the usa’s foreign debt, does not mean your socialist lifestyle on our credit will last forever.

  12. Actually, I think your multiple comments confused my Spam Karma into thinking you were a spambot and it moved your comments to my moderation queue. As soon as I discovered that I reinstated the comments.

I will NEVER delete a comment on the basis of disagreeing with me. Otherwise I would have to permanently ban my wife!
