Something else bears do in the woods

I received this story and photos via email:

The following (first two) pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded his 7 mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12′ 6″ high at the shoulder, 14′ to the top of his head. It’s the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist’s of the risks involved when in the wild). Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. His last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third picture below. The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker’s 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker. The other body has not been found. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear’s dead body) it only wounded the bear – and probably angered it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear’s own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker. Think about this – If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear’s belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

Here’s the grizzly post-mortem:

And check out that paw (and claws):

Ok, the last image is of one of the bear’s victims. It is graphic and grotesque. Fair warning, if you have a weak stomach or don’t care to view a mutilated corpse, don’t turn the page….

I warned you.

There are beasts that still walk the earth today that are every bit as scary as anything in Jurassic Park. You can’t really blame the bear, he was doing what bears do. The victim was in the bear’s environment and became part of the food chain. And the hunter became the hunted. We forget sometimes in our safe and comfortable suburban lives that there is still a wild world out there.

UPDATE:  More than 15 years after posting this story I received another comment that it is fake.  I stand corrected!

  1. I was going to post and thank you for hiding the last picture. Unfortunately, when you go to comment it isn’t hidden anymore.

That bear is freakin huge, whoa. That guy must have been scared s***less.

  2. John, I must say… Between your folksy adventures in Korea and your strident defense of your political views, this is the most interesting thing I have read here. I appreciate the wilderness and its beasts as much as the next guy, but I don’t care ever to run across a grizzly of any size or in any circumstances. We are all indeed sharing but a strand in the web of life. I couldn’t help taking a moment to really consider what it would be like to be taken alive, ripped apart and eaten by a wild animal so huge that resistance would be no less futile for the fight.

  3. Your warning made me look, but I still wasn’t prepared. What a way to die. You are killed by a bear and your chewed leg and genitals are all over the internet.

  4. Sorry Ashley, I didn’t think about how a comment would result in an inadvertant viewing.

Robin, I sorta debated whether I should even post that photo, but in the end I decided that it was worthy on several levels, provided no one was forced to see it (hence my apologies to Ashley).

And burlybastaad, I am always looking for “fresh” content to appeal to the varied tastes of my massive readership. It is a thankless job, glad I found something you could relate too!

  6. Are you sure these pictures are real? How could a bear be that big?! I am surprised the dead guy’s relatives aren’t sueing over the release of that picture-loss of dignity in death and all that crap. In fact you should consider the advisibility of posting a picture that could cause a reader extreme distress. No Ashley you cannot sue your parents. I need all my money for my old age.

  7. Grisly not only because of the leg either. I bet if he had known he was going to get eaten by a bear he would have tidyied up a little. We have all heard the “wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident thing.” Now maybe we need a new one – “You never know when you are going to have your pants pulled down by a ravenous grizzly bear so be sure to trim the tree.”

  8. umm, was the “grisly” thing supposed to be a pun as in grizzly bear? If so, really, really bad puns must run in the family. And that is definately scarier than the picture. I was afraid I was going to have nightmares last night because of the picture. Now I KNOW I am going to have nightmares about bad puns and wake up exhausted. That being said, my previous post still stands:)

  9. Does anyone remember the 1976 book and movie Grizzly? In that fictional land-Jaws story, the grizzly was 15 feet tall and weighed 2000 pounds. It would appear this Grizzly was almost the same size. As I recall, it took a laws rocket or RPG or something to kill the thing. How big do these animals get? The one in the book was considered a genetic freak!

  10. The pictures & the story are not related & the story is false. The actual story was much more mundane; the man pictured with the dead bear didn’t work for the forestry service, he was stationed at a nearby air base & just happened to kill that bear while on a legal hunt. The bear was big, but not a record; the photos are real but the corpse & the bear are not connected at all. I believe the corpse is that of the moronic Timothy Treadwell.

  11. actualy that picture isnt of timothy Treadwell tim was completly devored only a few peices were left. and the bear is a record the world record in fact. The bear was mounted and is at the airport on kodiak island i believe. the bear is the world record and those pictures are related

  13. The eaten victim; I note the bear didn’t eat his ”meat and two veggies”..

  14. Bullshit. I call bullshit. That first pic is a forced perspective. Something hunters and fisherman do (look it up). And the pic of the so called remains were taken with a newer HD camera, where’s as the first 2 pics were taken with something from the late 90’s / early 2000’s. The storey is bullshit, and the pics are in no way related to each other. Your an idiot to believe this work of fiction.

  15. The bear was NOT a record!!!! And they only found Timothy Treadwells head with a piece of his spine attached and his right arm up to the elbow with hand attached and wristwatch still on him and ticking.

  16. Brown bears have a very thick scull. So thick rifle bullets just ricochet off. Only a stupid uneducated hunter aims for a bears head. The same goes for a moose. The only way to kill it with a head shot is through the eye or ear. It is much easier to kill them with a heart or lung shot.

  17. You think that’s fake because someone told you out of the blue; people always say that, you have some that say the Holocaust was fake, come on! That’s real, especially since the bear didn’t eat his dick.

  18. I’m a retired cop, and combat vet. oh I looked..
I have seen it all.. the first time I wasn’t, and saw a decapitated woman.. since then too many. You get use to it and not let it bother you.
