Blast from the past…

Literally.  I Googled my name to see what was up with me lately and found a link to the sports page of the Prescott Courier, dated August 2, 1979.  And it reminded me of this long forgotten event over 30 years ago:

John McCrarey belted a two-run homer to give National Association of Letter Carriers their first lead, and Randy Cox tripled and scored the winning run on Steve Huddleston’s sacrafice as NALC beat Yavapai Title, 10-6 in slow pitch county tournament action.

Heh.  I was not by any means a power hitter, my forte was screaming liners down the right field line, often good for doubles and the occasional triple.  Still, in the day I was quite a fanatic about the game.

Yes I was a mailman and the local union president in Prescott, Arizona back then.  So of course the NALC sponsored our team.  I think I still have my jersey packed away somewhere back in the states.

So, thanks Google for the unexpected and pleasant memory from days gone by.

Geez, I’m such an old-timer.

  1. We need to fact check that story because it was no doubt written by a left wing media hack. 😉

By the way, I own one of your old jersey’s. It is yellow and has the number 7 and McCrarey on the back. I actually wear it because it is A: retro and cool and B: I am vain and like having my name on my back.

  2. That sounds like the “JD’s Lounge” jersey. A local bar in Prescott sponsored us for a while. We had that old Pittsburgh Pirates look going…yellow jersey/black trim, black pants/yellow striping, and yellow stirrups. We were so 70s back then…

  3. I remember taking a ton of bubble gum out of your bat bag. I have your ringwraiths jersey blue and white with McCrarey on the back. I should actually give that to Kevin next time I see him. I have a black and white one with some sort of flying horse on the back. Not sure what stains are on the front, looks like Gracyn after chocolate milk. But it has the number 7 on it too. Was that your only number? Why did you choose 7?

  4. Well, when I got to choose a number I always picked 7. Not sure why, I just thought it was “lucky” or something. The Ringwraiths shirts are from when I played in California. The black and white is older than you!

Yeah, you always knew where to find the sweet stuff. I would be better off if I’d stuck with gum instead of cigarettes!
